Different kinds of diplomacy take their forms due to the prevalent different 'modes'. For example a summitry diplomacy is the norm these days, in this diplomacy , the mode is that the head of states meet together to discuss problems and try to reach a conclusion. This has also given rise to multilateral diplomacy.

So in essence modes and types are one in same !
