So why was it that the English wrath fell on the Muslims exclusively???
And even before 1857, the British attitude towards the Hindu populace compared favorably against that reserved for the Muslims.
There are some plausible reasons in my mind but would like to know what the forum thinks...

Bengal was in the custody of Muslim rulers. In 1757 battle of plassey was fought between the Muslims and the English. after plassey, they again met in the battle field of buxer. these two battles engraved a bitter impact in the minds of the english.
The rulers of India were mughal, they were also Muslim. The english used to think that they had overcome the Muslims, therefor, they considered them their enemy.
it is true that the other groups also participated in the war of independence, bu the major contributions were from the Muslim side, therefore the English considered the Muslim their dangerous enemy and suppressed them after 1857.
