ESSAY
Education is the process of learning and knowing. It is life-long process. As Holy Prophet (PBUH) himself had said that seek knowledge from cradle to grave. The process of learning starts with the birth of a child. Education is a lamp with guides an individual through the journey of life. It turns hurdles into opportunities. It is such a powerful weapon by which the battle of life can be fought and won. As saying goes pen is mightier than sword. This might of pen has enabled man to explore the space. The dizzy heights that man has achieved can be attributed to education. Limiting the purpose of education to only getting a job is an insult to the significance of human life. Even the regular events and happenings teach us in one way or the other. Education does many things, but most importantly, it empowers an individual to think, question and see beyond the obvious. We are born with a natural tendency to question. Education satiates the question, but never put out fire.
The significance of education lies in the first word revealed by God to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in the first revelation was “Iqra” means to “read”. The fruits of education are most evident in developed countries. There, it means to alleviate poverty and cause social change. Education has fundamental role to play in personal and social development. The children and youth of our times who will take over from today’s adults need to be equipped with knowledge to usher in a better future.
There is no denying the fact that an educated person is a better citizen. It is education that adorns us with social qualities. Through education we get to know our duties and responsibilities. It encourages us to perform our obligations with sincerity of purpose.
Education guarantees secure and productive future. It procures us lucrative jobs. Educated person has different skills and he always manages to earn his livelihood. By utilizing his knowledge and intellect, he exceeds in every field and success is always waiting for him.
Education opens new vistas for us. It makes the journey of life smooth. It broadens our outlook and vision. It enables us to adopt a positive approach towards life. With the power of optimism, we are always ready to face the challenges of life smilingly. In this way, life gets easier and easier and new roads towards success are flung open.
Awareness is a virtue in itself. Lack of awareness is lamented everywhere. Education spreads awareness, informing us about our rights and the services that we can access. On the most basic notes, it teaches us to differentiate between right and wrong.
Decision-making is a very challenging and important process in one’s life. We have to face many ups and downs in our life. To tackle them, making right decision at right time is necessary. Education facilitates the decision-making process. It enables us to make to take right decisions and prevent losses.
Last but not least, an educated person is a confident person. Education fosters a positive outlook and allows us to believe in ourselves. Self-belief is the most wanted trait in a human being and education leads us towards relying on ourselves. It makes us believe that we are ready to take on the world.
Man has various qualities. These qualities of the individual should be developed for the improvement of the country. So education plays a complementary role for overall individual, social and national development enables an individual to realize his self and goal. The key functions and roles of education towards individual, society and country are listed below:
Functions of education towards an individual are:
• Education helps the child to develop his inborn potentialities.
• Education is a great modifying agent. It modifies our behaviour and attitude from conservative to secular.
• It ensures all-round development of a child. It aims at individual’s mental, physical, social, spiritual development.
• It adorns our personality and earns us our own recognition and status.
• Education also has a great moulding power. It brings flexibility to an individual’s nature that he never finds it difficult to get adjusted with any situation.
Functions of education towards society are:
• The society is not stationary. It is progressive and dynamic. It is the education which keeps the wheel of the society moving. It brings about positive changes in our society. It promotes brotherhood and harmony. It prevents social evils and purifies the society from superstitions and fake stories.
• Life is education and education is life. Since life is full of experiences, education guides us through all ups and downs of life successfully. It never lets us down in any hard time. We go on exploring new ways to life and success.
• Education teaches us the moral and social values like cooperation, tolerance, sympathy, fellow-feelings, love, affection, and respect towards elders, helping the poor and needy persons. Furthermore, education teaches us to give equal opportunities in all aspects of caste, creed, colour, sex and religion.
Functions of education towards the nation are:
• Education makes us realize civic and social responsibilities. An educated person is always aware of his duties towards his nation. He never transgresses the laws of the country. His every effort is directed to make his nation proud.
• Education not only imbibes but also furnishes leadership qualities of an individual. Since, competent leadership is indispensible for country’s development. And education serves this purpose very well by producing enlightened and diligent leaders who contribute a lot to the cause of the nation.
• Furthermore, education also acts as a great binding force. It promotes the sense of unity among the masses. People beset with knowledge shun their differences and prejudices. They develop collective feelings and rise above their vested interests.
• In the same way, united people direct all their energies towards the development of their nation. So, a nation with strong education sector never lags behind. Education reinvigorates social, economic, political, cultural, moral and spiritual aspects of a nation. Leading nations of the world have successfully harnessed the force of education and accomplished their goals.
From the above mentioned functions of education, it is clear that education is a lifeline for any country. Unfortunately, this sector in Pakistan has been the most neglected one. Multitier education system has been on of the major causes of decline of this system. There exist three different types of schools i.e. public schools, private schools and madrassa. Pakistan has been incurring a great loss due to such discrepancy in education system. Moreover, it has been reduced to only a means of earning one’s livelihood. It has become an instrument which has been much abused than used. The focus has shifted radically from character building to making students more marketable in the job market. We are not teaching our children to be upright citizens who have moral courage in the face of a crisis. Let’s pinpoint the major reasons of failure of this system in Pakistan.
Education has suffered a lot in the wake of government’s negligence and low investment. Only 2% of the total GDP is spent on this vital sector. Such a meagre amount is not sufficient to meet the demands. This amount is lesser as compared to other South Asian countries. Lack of maintenance and anomalies of allocated funds are further pushing this sector into swamp.
Like other sector, this sector is also not devoid of corruption. It is a sort of syndrome which is eating up our vitals and has made this sector hollow. The physical conditions of schools depict the true picture of mismanagement of funds. According to a survey, only 36% of public schools are judged to be in a satisfactory condition. Around 30,000 school buildings are dangerous, 24,000 schools have no building whatsoever, 60% of government-run schools have no electricity, 34% do not have drinking water and 23% go on without textbooks.
In addition to this, the malaise of copy culture and ratification is staining this system. It is drifting our children apart away from right education. It has benumbed our children. They have become addicted to rot learning. No one from teachers to students takes trouble to use his intellect.
All this can be attributed to the lack of competent teachers. Here teachers are appointed on political approach and nepotism. Merit in the appointment of teachers has always been neglected. Along with it, dearth of staff and lack of science and English teachers is wreaking havoc to this system.
Furthermore, rising poverty is one of the major causes behind the decline of education system. Almost 40 to 50 precent population of Pakistan lives below poverty line. Poor hardly earn enough to make they both ends meet. They cannot afford to educate their children. On the other hand, they have a large family to support so they prefer to utilize their youngsters as earning hands rather to send schools.
Last but not least, unemployment is proving a bolt form blue to this system. It is at zenith from two or more decades. So, the parents consider education futile. They are compelled to think that what the use of that education is which cannot even provide a respectable employment. Seeing such gloomy prospect, many students quit their study. Thousands of degree holders wander here and there in search of a white collar job. Even aspirant of education let themselves loose when they experience such situation.
Successive governments have taken substantial measures to rectify the blunders but no worthwhile outcome has originated so far. There is a need to search problems at the gross root level. Here are some suggestions:
First of all, there is a dire need to revise our curricula of the existing multiple schools and a single curriculum must be set forth so as to avoid polarization and gap between rural and urban citizens.
Secondly, government should augment its allocation to at least 4%.
Thirdly, instead of setting up new schools and colleges, the focus be given towards quality. We lack qualitative education. After achieving it, then we can move forward.
Fourthly, proper check and balance system is also required to harness our minimal allocations of funds effectively. Special attention must be paid in this regard as this is eating up the vitals of this sector.
Fifthly, scientific and technical education is dismal in Pakistan. Developed countries have progressed rapidly because they paid heed towards research, science and technology. Today China and US are leading in economy and this is attributed to science and technology.
Sixthly, training and research courses must be initiated to abreast teachers with update teaching tactics and methodologies and making them efficient in their respective fields.
Seventhly, prepared notes and guides be proscribed by the government or the respective ministry so that teachers can inculcate independent and critical thinking in students.
Last but not least, removing socio-economic inequality will encourage parents to send their children to schools. Widespread corruption, favouritism and nepotism are making rich the richer and poor the poorer. This social and economic inequality is being turned into ideological inequality by the militant groups. This socio-economic inequality must be shunned at all levels.
To conclude, education is not mere textbook knowledge. Real education goes beyond that. It is a power that turns impossible into possible. Good education imparts humanity. All the great and ideal personalities of the world are the output of education. It has produced many great scientists, historians, poets, politicians, leaders and champions who changed the course of the whole world. Good education gets us know right from wrong, good from bad and moreover it effaces bigotry from our hearts. It promotes fellow-feelings and unity. It helps us using our senses positively and creatively. It imparts self-development of the body, mind and spirit. All the comfort and luxuries we enjoy are the gifts of education. It is a ladder that can be used to climb out of poverty, ignorance, oppression and war/It can easily be said that the education is the best weapon to fight poverty, ignorance, oppression and war.
