Let the income be x. Then 1/10 or 0.1 of the income will be spent on clothes so x-0.1x. The remainder is 0.90x. 1/10 of the remainder (0.9x) is 0.09x which was spent on food. So the remainder is 0.90x-0.09x = 0.81x. 1/3 of 0.81x = 0.27x which was spent on rental. So the equation becomes;

1x - 0.1x - 0.09x - 0.27x = 648

0.54x = 648

x= 648/0.54 = 1200

So the total income in Rs. 1200.
