The point you missed is that there is a difference between one big mass and infinite mass.

Albiruni ,born in 973 AD, estimated the diameter of Earth (his figure was very near to the correct one). And your uncle did not work to prove that earth is spherical but to prove that the sun is center around which earth and other planets revolve, the theory known as heliocentric theory.
