A THING OF BEAUTY IS JOY FOR EVER

Beauty is the combination of qualities that gives pleasure to the senses. It can be anything the exposure of which makes a person happy and delighted. It is an inborn instinct in humans to appreciate beauty. Beauty both of nature and of a human form have been a powerful attraction for man and women of all ages and climes.

A beautiful object fills the heart with joy and delight. Man has developed an eye for beauty right from the Stone Age. Even in the ancient times people try to seek out beauty in the surroundings. In stones, in trees, in clay, in grass in everything that they used to see and experience. Even in that time each and every human has his own taste about beauty thus the assumption BEAUTY LIES IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDER took birth. The concept later on diversified from the writings of the poets and the writers when they highlighted the beauty of nature. Started praising the stars that at first were very ordinary for people, full moon used to come even before the writings of the poets after every fourteen days but no one noticed that its light has romanticism in it. The night gets beautiful when the moon is at its full. Then in contrast came the nights without moon, and for some people they were beautiful because these dark nights has the power to hide all the woes in life for sometime. Then personification enhanced the beauty when the dark long hairs of women were compared with the dark nights. The poets gave the people new ways of perceiving things thus experiencing beauty in each and every scene. God has created everything with a drop of beauty in it , beauty in both physical and spiritual context.

Beauty abounds in nature, the sunrise, the sunset, the moon, the stars, the rainbow and the seasons delights the senses. Beautiful sight and sounds of nature provides pleasure to man. The river, the forests, the green mountains, the snow-capped peaks and the flowers are beautiful objects of nature. They leave an impression on the mind of man. Recollection of this impression becomes a constant source of joy.

Considering, Poets for taking beauty as the most favourite subject of writings. KEATS was a great lover of beauty in all its varied forms. THE DANCING DAFFODILLS seemed by Wordsworth during his travel left a mark in his memory. He composed a poem on daffodils after four years of that visit but felt the same delight which reflected in the poem. The last verses shows that even the memory of those daffodils brightens his mind

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

Beautiful sights are also a source of joy for painters. Paintings are the poetry of colours which depicts nature as it is on the canvas. A painter is always in search of a place where he could find any form of beauty whether of nature or human to adorn his canvas with everlasting charm of beauty. Best example can be of Leonardo Di Vinci.

Beauty is like a fragrance, when it is present in a particular era it makes all its surroundings aware of its presence. It is attention seeking. Emotions are also beautiful as they show love and affection; a heart full of strong love is a beautiful thing and delights the beloved like anything. The feeling of respect for any person parents, mentors etc creates a harmony in relations thus beautifying them. The love of a mother for her child, there is nothing one can compare with that true love. The beautiful expression of that love. The expression in the eye of the mother when she sees her child gives a very pleasant feeling. The warmth of the motherly eyes takes all the worries from the child.

Good writing expression is also very soothing for mind. One beautiful verse makes a person very relaxed and delighted. And expressive short story, a novel with a good novel, a drama with fine dialogues gives a person remarkable moments of his life. Good writings gives the readers peace of mind and pleasure. Like reading the following lines of Hard Times by Charles Dickens:

IT IS SAID THAT EVRY LIFE HAS ITS ROSES AND THORNS; THERE SEEMED HOWEVER, TO HAVE BEEN A MISTAKE IN STEPHENS’S CASE,WHEREBY SOMEBODY ELSE HAD RECEIVED HIS ROSES, AND HE HAD IN RETURN THE SAME SOMEBODY ELSES’S THORNS IN ADDITION TO HIS OWN


This dialogue leaves a smile on the face of the reader due to its deepness, thought and skill of Mr Dickens.

Another form of beauty lies in the cement, stones, wood, bricks etc. all these things have no shape and beauty but when they are used artistically by an architect they take the form of a beautiful building. A number of historical buildings all over the world like Taj Mahal in India, Eiffel Tower in Paris, Opera House in Australia, Great Wall of China are some of the buildings which are famous for their beauty.

Turning the coin to the other side, considering the beauty with spiritual context reveals many secrets of eternal joy. Spiritual beauty is nobler and higher then physical beauty. It is related to the beauty of the spirit and the soul. Spiritual beauty is accompanied by truth and goodness. A person having this beauty is in fact the most blessed person in this world. This beauty awards the person with joy along with nobility and satisfaction. Spiritual beauty comes when a person has a pure heart with no hatred, grudge, injustice, or prejudice for anyone. Such pure hearts have strong direct linkage with God. This linkage equips them with love, affection, happiness, pleasure and satisfaction. This is the most wonderful and eternal form of beauty. It links man with eternity.
