Open Positions

The Knowledge Management Institute, part of the Faculty of Computer Science at Graz University of Technology (AUSTRIA), has a number of PhD and Master Candidates in Agent-Oriented Engineering and Social Computing available:

- 2 PhD Positions (2,5 years each)
- 2 Master Positions (1 year each)

Funded by the FWF Austrian Science Grant "AGENT-ORIENTED ENGINEERING OF SOCIAL SOFTWARE"
2008-2010

Start Date: January-March 2008

The Knowledge Management Institute is seeking 2 PhD students and 2 Master students with a strong interest in agent- and goal-oriented engineering concepts in the context of social computing. Current support for PhD students is available for 2,5 years, support for Master students is available for 1 year.

Students accepted will be involved in research related to agent-oriented engineering of social search, social authoring and social sharing software.
The project will involve research on different forms of intentional representations, goal extraction and mining, and goal-based knowledge bases in the context of agent- and goal-oriented modeling and design concepts, social network theory and analyses, and text analysis techniques.

Requirements for PhD positions:
- a degree in computer science or related fields (applications about to finish their studies are encouraged to apply)
- Excellent programming and writing skills
- Ambition to produce internationally recognized research output

Requirements for Master positions:
- Background in computer science or a related field
- Excellent programming skills

We offer a work environment that allows members to present and establish their research results at international conferences, summer schools and scientific workshops. The Knowledge Management Institute has well established links to national and international research institutions. The project involves a research collaboration with the KM lab at the University of Toronto and provides travel allowance for PhD students to attend, for example, PhD workshops / summer schools.

The Knowledge Management Institute together with the associated Know-Center is a group of 40 scientists in knowledge management, social computing and information retrieval. The KM Institute is co-organizer of the largest European conference on knowledge management and involved in a large European

Integrated Research Project.

The PhD positions are available as early as possible. The Master positions will be available in 2008 and 2009. PhD candidates and Master students receive compensation in correspondence with the FWF Austrian Science Fund regulations.
