When a new employee joins the organization he is stranger and vice versa. He feels insecure, shy, and nervous in the strange organization. He may have anxiety because of lack of adequate information about the job, work procedures, organizational policies and practices etc. Frustration is likely to develop due to such ambiguities. Effective orientation can minimize the impact of reality shock some new employees may undergo. Often freshers join the organization with very high expectations, which may be far beyond the reality. When they come across with reality, they often feel shocked. By proper orientation, the newcomers can be made to understand the reality of the situation.

Orientation is a process of introduction/awareness/assimilation/familiarity/socialization/acquitting new employees with the organization. Technique by which a new employee is rehabilitated into the changed surroundings. It removes fears, creates good impression and acts as a valuable source of information. Basic purpose of orientation is to communicate specific job requirements to the employee, put him at ease and make him/her feel confident about his/her abilities. Orientation serves as socialization tool where newcomers understand the system, people, acceptable behaviors, norms, and ethics. Helps new inductees to adjust and adapt in the new organization.

Process of orientation covers following major steps:

· Welcome to the organization, receiving and welcoming the employees.
· Company introduction, history, organizational structure, organogram, goals, culture
· New employee is introduced to superiors, coworkers, subordinates, trainers, and counselors
· Newcomers are informed about the working hours, work place/organizational tour/visit, performance standards, benefits and facilities, and names of the immediate and other officers.
· Job tasks, job safety needs, job objectives, relation with other jobs
· Handing over bank manuals, polices, rules and regulations to the fresh inductees
· Presenting details of various work units
· Presenting salary structures, various fringe benefits (medical, insurance, recreations and retirement benefits), leave, mandatory leave, holidays, emphasizing punctuality etc.
· Explaining training mechanism, probationary period, and career path
· Clarifying the doubts by encouraging new recruitees for raising as my questions as they feel necessary
· Filling out various forms/requirements/terms and conditions/job conduct/code of ethics/ agreements
· Crash course and some presentations, short lectures

New employee orientation effectively integrates the new employee into organization and assists with retention, motivation, job satisfaction, and quickly enabling each individual to become contributing members of the work team.
