Default banking career...

Banking career is generally considered as lucrative one. Though the perception is not completely true, yet banking offers comparatively better career prospects. Quite handsome monetary compensation along with fringe benefits such as medical, bonuses , staff loans are some of the hallmarks of banking career.
Before 1990's a major proportion of banking industry was under public control. That time job in public sector bank was by no means less lucrative than any other public sector organization. However the deregulation process started in 1992 with privatization of MCB triggered cut throat competition. It has lead the exponential expansion of banking industry with number of total banks operating in Pakistan reached to 52.
This expansion bodes well for economy as it created many job opportunities, lead to automation of banking and raised the service standards of the banking. But simultaneously many of the perks and privileges that were available to the employees during Govt Control were withdrawn. Currently bankers working in private banks are found complaining about the working conditions , job insecurity, over load and salary not being in line with the economic conditions.
However young bankers do have the opportunity to switch to other banks to get higher grades and compensation.
That said, given the rising unemployment in the country, banking may be opted as a career , if no better opportunity in comparison to banking is available.
Here I am going to share few tips that may help a job hunter explore career in banking.
1-Regester yourself in the career database of all banks.here is link of all banks operating in Pakistan.
http://www.sbp.org.pk/f_links/index.asp
2- Register yourself at Job websites especially Rozee.pk
3- Banks normally post their jobs in national press especially in Jang and Dawn of Sunday.
4- Professional certifications/qualifications(ACCA,ACMA,CFA,CIA,CISA etc ) enhance one’s chance of getting employers attention.
5- JAIBP certificate from IBP(www.ibp.org.pk) increases your chance of entry in to banking.
6-IBP is offering an other course for potential bankers, certified teller course. It may help you enter in to the banking arena.

I have some questions regarding banking career. Recently I am working as BS 16 employee in Govt. Sector since last 2 and a half years. But I am keenly interested to join banking as my career. Govt jobs are boring and there is no creativity in govt jobs. On the other hand there is less work burden in govt sector as compared to banking sector. Will you suggest me to opt banking as my career or should I carry on with my current job? Please I need your opinion about it.
Thanks,

Thanks,
Ambreen has rightly said to stay in your current job until you find a good opportunity somewhere eles. I 'll further add that in current scenario public sector job is better than private sector. So try to explore opportunities with in Govt. sector and even if you prefer banking than try for some public sector bank.

Compare the terms of employment such as Salary, Nature of Job, annual increments and fringe benefits.

I have appointed as MTO in a bank some 9 months ago, before that I was serving in a Pharmaceutical on good position.

To me the banking is job doesn't worth it, you have to reach the office before 9am and there is no time to leave office, this is regular exercise in most of banks in Pakistan, you have to work like clerk in branches and decision making is at your Head Office, if you are in Finance/CAD/Treasury dept you are learning for few years but after sometime you just stuck and exercise the same day routine work which never changes.

Branch Banking has charm as you build relations and can be beneficial to your friends, social circle by helping them in loans or etc but you have to fetch deposits for promotions and salary increments.

Other departments like loaning, product based work is quite hectic and have charm like conferences and workshops, you travel at times and meet other banks, you can switch after fair bargaining BUT the job takes a lot of time, you cant fairly study or give good time to friends after a tiring day.

But it depends, NBP and SBP has quite good salaries, and benefits, and newly introduced Sindh Bank Ltd has good charm in coming years but private banks are extracting blood out of veins, think twice before stepping into Banking Sector... I myself who is a social freak, is not content but it has charm as in:

1. Well equipped office
2. Health Insurance
3. Air conditioned branches/offices
4. Proper dress code
5. Banking standards and rules are followed

In summary:

You look like an executive and work like a clerk (Said by our Senior auditor who advised me to join his department and see the charm of auditors in Banking)

Regards,

I totally agree with you that the private bank timing is not good. Banking Career ruins the social life. The Baking timing should be from 9-3. not more than that. Private Banks just wants donkeyes, who work day and nite.
But what other choice we have ? And what We can do with this???
