latest paper pattern 2018
While downloading papers of CSS 2017, I noticed that in English precis paper you have a choice for at least four questions in part two. This means that precise, translation, pair of words, idioms or comprehension or other questions can be left on choice. Candidates do not need to prepare all of that. It as surprising for me as till now every mentor, every post and every interview gave the impression that English composition is all about precise, but I think that is not the case.
The questions is that why we tend to prepare everything even whe we have a margin of two to three or even four questions. Please share your views. |

I know why you are getting confused and asking this question. Paper of 2017 was shared by CSP AminaShah101. In information above questionnaire she has mistakenly written general instructions which are applicable to all other papers but not English Precis and Composition paper and also essay paper. Here is the link to original paper: http://www.fpsc.gov.pk/icms/admin/we...17_Updated.pdf English paper is all about precis and composition. Usually these are the deciding factor for passing or failing.

No you are right. Precis and composition carry 40 marks. So you still have 60 marks in your hand. Even if you manage to score low marks in precis and composition( lets's say 10), you can still score 30 marks from remaining 60. But you must be prepared well for questions other than precis and composition.

About 60% other portion of the paper, one can never be sure about that part that he or she is well prepared. There are a lot of lists, grammar, translation etc and a lot of cramming and understanding involved in that portion. There is no fixed syllabus for the portion. Over the years students have successfully crammed lists of word ranging from 500-5000 and still it happens that the synonyms, antonyms, idioms or pair of words were not in that list. For example check objective portion of CE-17. No matter how hard one tries still he or she will ended up with low score in this portion. Students are barely passing this subject and this paper usually decides the fate of candidate so, in order to pass the subject (only pass. I am not saying scoring well), one must focus on all parts equally. You can check DMC's of qualified candidates in recent years on this forum and see your self their score even toppers have barely passed this subject. Only a few pass this subject and the % of successful candidates who have crossed 45 is even lower. Most of them are passing at edge. So, one must never ignore any part especially precis and composition as they are considered to be the backbone of this paper.
