Would a degree from New Zealand make me eligible to apply?
 

Hi all,

I have done my Bachelors from New Zealand with an A grade overall,
would that make me eligible to do CSS knowing that my degree is not from Pakistan?

Also, I am currently residing in New Zealand and will only be coming to Pakistan
to write the CSS exam next year feb. I have a gazillion questions and I was wondering if you guys could guide me a little.

1. Where can I get the online books from?
2. Do I need any coaching/ tuitions from Pakistan for the papers or studying individually should be good enough?
3. How many papers are recommended per year and which ones which you guys suggest?


I guess thats all for now in terms of my questions. I would really appreciate if you guys could help me out a bit.

1. Actually you will need someone to get you books from Pakistan, as most of the books used for CSS are written locally and are not published internationally. But that is not a big issue. First you need to finalize your optional subjects.

2. You do need some advice from Pakistan for the CSS exam, as there are some differences in foreign education and Pakistani education.

3. There are 6 compulsory subjects which everyone has to undertake. They carry 600 marks. You have to choose optional subjects carrying 600 marks. There is a long list of subjects available to choose from. Some carry 200 marks, some carry 100 marks.

Keep in mind, that since this exam is the premier exam of Pakistan, so you need to keep in touch with Pakistani newspapers, Pakistani news channels and perspectives of Pakistani people. The syllabus contains international author's books for every subject but you have to rely heavily on Pakistani local books as they will get you prepared for the exam reasonably quick and easy.

1. business administration (I should be able to use some famous author's reading materials for this??)
2. Law
3. Psychology including experimental pyschology
4. sociology


Do you think this is a good combo?

It depends upon your backgroud/expertises. Usualy people prefer Public Ad over Business Ad. Sociology is very general subject and is opted from many candidates. However Psychology and Law need background or some guidence.

Before you indulge in further discussion, you should tell your educational background. What subjects did you already study?

Go with law subjects only if you have a law background; its very techincal and a very lenghty subject simultaneously. It contains Qanun-e-Shahadat 1984, Code of Criminal Procedure , Pakistan Panel Code, Civil Procedure Code, Contract Act and Law of Torts. Infact, these are six lenghty indivial subjects. I would say "Law" contains the lengheist syllabous in all the other available options. Even with a law background, i would not dare to opt this subject.

You have alternate options , which can be opted without background like Internatioal Law, International Relations, Journalism and Constitutional Law; These are easy alternate options having limited syllabous .

I have done a Bachelors of Business with Human Resource Management major, Business admin is exactly what I studied during my Bachelors.
Sociology is something I am really interested in and so is psychology.
And the reason for choosing Law is I have done loads of courses in Employment, Health and Safety and Commercial Law and found it very easy to sort of understand.

To be honest, I rather choose papers I am comfortable and interested in rather than what my background is. If you guys think there is nothing wrong with this combo, I will definitely opt it.

Also, I want to finish off my optional courses first because I haven't lived in Pakistan since ages so I will need extra help with Islamiat, Pakistan Studies and the like.


Does it matter if these subjects are commonly taken by people?
I mean I have no idea about history and have always found it difficult to remember the facts, let alone quoting it

Yes.

You will be required to get an equivalence letter from Higher Education Commission and submit it with the CSS Application Forms.

To be honest :) i can assure you Law will give you tough time, if your are going to opt it. CRPC alone contains more than 500 sections; PPC also contains more than 500 sections; CPC alone contains more than 150 sections and more than 50 orders which further have more than 500 rules and is the hardest nut for the lawyers; Qanun-e-shahadat though a bit short subject but too much technical; you may be able to do Contract act because you have a little background and this is easy subject as well, but over all this is the toughest subject.

If you have read commercial and employment laws, I would advise you to opt Mercantile Law; it is more compatible with your background, but contains only 100 marks. For more one hundred, Journalism or International law or international relations are the best options for your.

Let me be very clear to you, any two subjects amongst Mercantile law, International law, international relations and journalism, will only consume your time which would alone be required to prepare CPC or CRPC or PPC.

And yes, opting common subjects may affect the results, but exceptions are always there.
