Wa Alaikum Salaam
You need to choose 4-6 subjects of 100 or 200 marks each. Worth of all optional subjects should be 600 in total.
Following are rules of choosing optional subjects:
Group 1- Only 1 subject of 200 marks
Group 2- Either 1 subject of 200 marks or 2 subjects of 100 marks each
Group 3-7: 1 subject from each group worth 100 marks each

It is compulsory to choose subject or subjects of 200 marks from group 1 or group 2 to complete 600 marks. You can choose subjects from both group 1 or group 2. This can make total of your subject 400. From other groups you can choose rest of subjects.

What should I choose between international relations and political science?
Definitely IR as it is more scoring. (Trend of score-Medium High)
Psychology (Medium High)
Public administration (Low to medium in 2016)
Indo pak history (Medium High)
Gender studies (Medium)

Further elaboration and suggestions:

1-Trend of GS is medium scoring. It is a general subject but certain topics are technical in nature. It can consume a lot of time if you are planning to study from foreign books as multiple sources are required for that approach. However, if local books are your choice then 2 books and 1 report can do the tick. You can reconsider this subject. More scoring options are present in the same group like Environmental Sciences.

2- Public Administration was low to medium scoring because no good book was present but now a very good book is available and scoring trend will be changed soon as streaks do not last long. It is recommended to take it with political science or if you are not taking a subject from any one of the 5 groups from 3-7. As you are taking IR, so my suggestion is to take IL. Their syllabus is overlapped. IL is different from other law subjects. Only a few sections. It is extremely high scoring.

3- Indo-Pak history & US history have almost same scoring trend. You are familiar with former but it is bit lengthy while later one has shortest syllabus. Moreover, Indo-Pak H. helps in Pak affairs while US history is helpful in IR. Decision is yours.

4-Go through syllabus of subjects which you have decided and the ones I have suggested in detail again. After that make your final choice. Scoring trend is important but one should always consider his interest and aptitude. If you are still confuse about one or two optional subjects worry not. You have time till end of Oct (Last date of sending application). You can decide about them later.

Book suggestions:
Compulsory subjects:
English Essay:
No book is required. Just practice one essay every week and get it checked from a competent teacher who should have experience of teaching CSS aspirants. Two things are important for essay i.e. concepts and grammar. 10 essay topics will be given in exams from different fields like current affairs, literature etc. See past papers you will get the idea. Select one topic from latest past papers or current affairs topics, gather material and start writing. See essay section of the forum to get guidance about writing essays. Many model essays are available on this forum. For grammar portion, I am going to guide you in English precis & comprehension section. Your teacher in Nova must equip you with knowledge to write essays and must check your practice work. Otherwise quit English essay classes there and get help from competent teacher who can help with that.

English Precis & Composition:
Buy following book:
English Grammar & Composition by Hafiz Kareem Dad Chughatai by Caravan publishers.
He has covered everything in his book and no other source is required. Practice exercises are also given along with past papers. Learn tenses, change of voice, narration and grammar so that it can help you with all the subjects as in CSS they check you English in pretty much all the subjects. Practice precis, translation and comprehension on weekly basis from past papers. Divide list words according to 6 months time. Leave rest of the time from January onward for revisions. Start memorizing the lists. Then revise them on weekly and monthly basis if you can.

Islamiyat:
Again buy book by Hafiz Kareem Dad Chughatai. He has written books in both languages Urdu and English. Choose in which language you are going to attempt.

Current Affairs:
Read daily dawn news paper
JWT monthly magazine
Current affairs by Waseem Riaz Khan by JWT for past topics

Pakistan Affairs:
Book by JWT. Latest topics will be covered in CA.

General Science & Ability:
by book by Mian Shafique of JWT publishers. For G.S portion it is enough. You can add extra info from internet on book if you want. For ability portion book is not enough. Some links have been recently shared on General Science & Ability section of this forum very recently. Check them out and practice.

Optional Subjects:
For IR:
You need to consult 2 books:
1- Joshua Goldstien (core book)
2- JWT book (For topics not covered by J.G)
(3- Globalization of world's politics as an excellent book if you want to consult)

For IL:
Buy S.K kapoor's book. It is enough.
If want to consult more than 1 books buy JWT as it is according to syllabus.

US history:
1- Book by Majumdar
2- Sir Naveed Bhutto's notes
3- You can also consult JWT book. I am doing it.
(4- People's history by Howard Zinn an excellent book if you want to consult)

Indo-Pak History:
1- by JWT written by Azmat Farooq

Gender studies:
1- Caravan Gender studies book
2- UN human rights report on Pakistan

Environmental Sciences:
1- JWT my Imran Bashir
2- by Botkin & Keller

Public Administration:
1- Dr. Sultan Khan's new book 2017 edition by famous books

Psychology:
1- Book by Feldman
2- JWT book

I do not know which edition is latest. Buy only 2017 edition that was probably published in April or May 2017. Previous editions were according to previous syllabus. New one is according to new syllabus.

My pleasure. If you still have any ambiguity regarding 1 subject you can decide it letter. Absolutely no need to waste time on that.
