Continue as Software Engineer or go for CSS
Salaam Everyone,
This is Abdul, I am actually tangled in making a critical career choice for myself i.e. continue as a Software Engineer in Middle East(Pay is Good but there are factors like job security, future clarity etc. here) on the other hand, I have option of leaving this Job, go back to Pakistan and train and attempt CSS(Although I am pretty confident to pass the exam but there are obvious fears of failing). CSS has great future with no extra tensions. My age is 23 which is a plus point in making any choice from both the options. Kindly, can the experience ones share their suggestions for what I should do and what will be better for me. Much Appreciated. Thanks, |

Dear Abdul,
I am glad about you for thinking seriously about your career. There are pros and cons of both the decisions. Pros of CSS 1)Respect 2)Job security 3)Government job 4)you can develop strong references for futures e.g. IGs , Commissioners and Secretaries shall be your closest friends. 5)If you manage to get seat of foreign services then the perks are endless. 6)Above all, serving Pakistan Cons of CSS 1) VVVVVV Unpredictable 2) High failure ratio 3) Very very lengthy process; let us assume you clear CSS in two chances which means you invested 3 years in this CSS. Pros and Cons of Job in Middle East LoL you know better What to do? In my view, if you are adventurous and really want to be in something unique then step into it. It requires patience. I would recommend you to start any private job here,in Pakistan, along with preparation. Never ever prepare in isolation and being free-not doing job. Hope this helps. |

And if you think there are no extra tensions in CSS, you are under an illusion. Life is pretty tough for civil servants, most of whose main concerns are to get good offices, vehicles, accommodation and compliant staff. All of them have become pretty scarce lately. There are pretty horrible bosses out there and also pressures from the top. Bureaucracy is simply Top-Down and you have very little space to maneuver. Moreover, staff is most of the times out of control. Take any department and there are similar conditions almost everywhere. There is a fair chance you will be thrown in semi-urban areas; best posts will be taken by the well connected. Transfers will again be dependent on how well connected you are. Pays are pretty dismal, and all fringe benefits have dwindled recently. I have given you a brief snapshot of job conditions. I guess the work and time you will dedicate to get through this process is also pretty long and there is opportunity cost for this time. Moreover, there are no guarantees that you will make it as the exam is notoriously unpredictable. I will just recommend to consider the other side of the picture before heading on to go for CSS. |

Thanks for the replies, most of the answers are pretty well explained but until now I doesn't find any consensus between the opinions, will wait for some more before I make my decision

Do Css
Hi,
Are you a developer? If yes, then in which language you code? I would recommend you to start preparations for css. Leave job, but, right after February ( exams ), start job. I am myself a software developer. There is nothing to lose for a software developer, its just a loss of some months' salary; not bad! Having said that, I do want to tell you that Css is neither impossible nor too easy. So, if you are a good developer ( and 100% sure that you will get job easily ), then start preparation for Css. Regards |
