IR vs Accountancy

Hi All,
I have almost completed my M. Com (3 1/2 years) from Hailey College of Commerce, University of the Punjab, Lahore and I aspire to appear in CE-2017.
What I want to discuss with all of you is that I am confused about choosing one of the subjects; IR and Accountancy and Auditing.

As I have studied till MS level in the field of commerce, I do have a background for Accountancy and Auditing, though I have not specialized in Accounting and Auditing (I chose finance instead).

As per my case, both the subjects have their pros and cons and this is what confuses me a lot. Let me explain them one by one.

As far as Accountancy and Auditing is concerned, the pros for me are that it's the field I am in for the last 5 or 6 years. In past, I have been scoring satisfactorily good in Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Tax, and Auditing. So, it will be easy for me to study this subject. The other advantage is that this subject is considered to be a scoring one (though it's just a hearsay and I have no solid reason for it).

Now the cons are that its major portion consists of numerical portion, which is kind of a risk; and taking such a risk in CE is certainly not advisable as far as I think. In past, I have also failed some lapses while doing numerical questions, which has seriously affected my grades.

The rest consists of theoretical portion and the worst part is that I have never studied accounting from theoretical aspects. Though I have an understanding of the concepts, but I never practiced writing a theoretical accounting question at bachelors and then masters level. The other thing is that while studying accountancy, I may develop a sense of complacency in my attitude which may lead me astray.

Now coming towards IR, I would like to say that its pros are that it seems an interesting subject to me and it would also help me develop an understanding of current international scenario, which will in turn help me in Current Affairs and probably English Essay as well.

The only con of IR which seems to me is that I have never studied it before as a subject, so it may pose me problems. Moreover, I have often seen people on this forum who suggest that this subject is a tough touch to tackle, especially when it features 200 marks.

Please advise which subject should I finally choose? IR or Accountancy and Auditing?

Pick accountancy, IR is one of the lowest scoring subjects with a very lengthy course.

Add to the fact that many students will pick IR, so the paper will be even tougher, if you have an accounting background then definitely go for it.

Don't be hurry during selection of optional subjects. Accounting and auditing is one of the scoring subject as compare to other. Keep in mind two things if you opt this subject; 1) You have strong background for this subject 2) You must have interest and aptitude towards this subject.
As far as IR is concerned, it gain importance after the revision of syllabus. Although it is very lengthy and difficult subject, but it can help you in other subjects as well, like in essay, Pakistan affair and current affair.
Finally my suggestion is go for accounting if you have strong background, otherwise IR is best option for you.

I am facing the same dilemma.
I have done ACCA and CFA. I am very apt at these Accounting and Auditing subjects. Moreover, I have studied IR in BA and I liked it very much. I am still at sea though as to which subject to pick.
I think I can study anyone but I need to pick one which will boost my aggregate at the end of the day. Need some seasoned heads though to guide me.
Fingers crossed.

Go for that subject which your heart and mind agrees on. I myself am a business graduate and have a good know how about the basics of accounting (I deteste it) .Instead i opted IR for my 2016 attempt
reason
1) Interest ( during my spare time i usually do study about different theories of IR)
2) A helping subject for current affairs, pak affairs, intl law, essay and to some extent us history

so my advice do not give an ear to these rumors that IR is difficult or accountancy is so confusing. Bhai go for that subject which you have a grip and interest upon. Baqi Allah malik hai, course complete hojata hai trust me.

Im also in the same kinda situation. Im still in inter commerce though but i know all the syllabus, the procedure etc of css which is my first priority than any other thing to accomplish in life. So ive been thinking should i go for ir or ACCA ??? I mean there is no scope for IR if Godforbid you fail. But it overlapse in many other useful subjects. On the other hand ACCA would help me in Accounting which hasnt been a problem for me in this intermediate, will be a high scouring subject. But for ACCA i would have to get any other degree to for CSS and im not in favour of studying 4 years more just to get a degree.. long story short IR would save me time and make me introduce to other subjects but no employment, ACCA will just consume much of my time which i cant spare.... plz give your humble opinions.
