My Friends ! In my opinion Arabic is far better then Indo Pak History as Arabic is among one of the highest scoring subjects. While Indo Pak history has kept on proving to be a nightmare for the aspirants over the years. Particularly the years 2009,2010 and 2011 have been extremly harsh for this subject. While there was a respite seen in 2012. Still one cant predict the trend of 2013 as result will unfold it and neither one can make some idea about the paper of 2014. However, the way it has kept proving disaster for the aspirants , this subject is now mostly seen with scepticism .
On the contrary Arabic does not ditch the aspirants. As well as its trend is concerned it has almost all the time remained scoring and is expected to remain the same. The reason behind this optimism is the syllabus and paper pattern of this subject.
If you have seen the apaper , the Paper II contains two questions of translation which can give more then 30/40 if prepared properly.
Then there are 40 mcqs. 40 mcqs ( collective of both papers ) keep on getting repeated . ( 30+ from these can be obtained with slight concentrated effort). If only past ten years paper's mcqs are solved , one can score round 30 + scores from the objective.
Then there are 30 marks short questions. 20 marks SQ in paper A and 10 marks SQ in paper B. They also can give maximum out of these if attempted correctly. For them preparing past papers SQ proves very very much helpful.
The rest of the paper consist of theoretical questions which is prepared from notes or books.
In this way , one can see that paper pattern is of such nature that if one can prepare this paper well , one has very bright prospects of getting good marks.

Thank you for your feedback, but I have listened from some people that papers of Arabic are getting tough gradually. Moreover the language is totally outlandish for me, although there is portion that I have would have to attempt in English but still, even the names of Arabs haunt me with so much of Khalid bin Ali bin Muhammad bin etc etc etc

I have little time for the preparation of Optional subjects, I would have to reserve time for revision, and I am still about to complete my Compulsory subjects. Actually I started preparation two months ago. I was of the view that if Indo pak history is a scoring subject i should opt it, it is more familiar to me, and as I have prepared Pakistan Affairs my Paper II of Indo Pak is also prepared. Anyways how much time Arabic would take approximately??

I guess it would take less time then Indo Pak history. Its mcqs , short questions dont take much time for their preparation. The 40 marks translation portion does consume time. And remaining 80 marks subjective portion for both the papers also does not take much time. then there is 10 marks short essay. In short , it took me not more then a month , even less then that.
can arabic be taken without background?
Certainly it can be. However one should have aptitude for languages. Besides this interest in literature and history also [proves better.
