Only in Islamic studies one has option to attempt in Urdu.
All languages in their respective languages like Punjabi in Punjabi but some may require to answer part of question in other language say as English or Urdu (hardly happens).
All other subjects in English.

I'm going to appear in the upcoming exam

I've opted for IR, IL, Sociology, Hist of USA, Gender Studies

I was a bit curious about International Law, could anyone please tell me what sort of a subject it is in the context of marking? Plus is it true that Studying IR would help me in getting a firm grasp over IL as they're sort of similar?

I do not know much about Town Management. But, I have a knowledge of Philosophy which I choose instead of International Law.
Why Philosophy?
It helps in IR more than International Laws helps.
It makes you better essay writer.
and last but crucial
It passionate me.

IL is very high scoring subject and you can even score above 90 in it.
Yes both subjects are related and taking both as optional along with US history is highly recommended.

Philosophy is a very high scoring subject according to not only past trends but also recent trends but here are some realities about philosophy and about comparison of both subjects.

Most of the students find it as a very dry and less interested subject. Not many has attempt this subject so a little guidance is available. Also no body has scored above 80 in Philosophy in previous exam while in IL many have scored above 90 and the highest scored I have seen was 93. So marks trend of IL is very high. About helping in IR. Contents of many subjects are same but why all are saying that IL and IR are highly recommended combination because language of both subjects is same. There is a key terminology of all subjects and answer should be given according to that language and terminology. Knowledge of contents is one thing and writing properly according to subject's demand is another thing. You can take example of two previous part 2 papers of IR. Most of the questions were like CA paper and many of the candidates thought they have attempted well but they were wrong. Demand was to write according to IR by relating it with IR theories and concepts and not like CA.
If you are taking philosophy I am wishing you good luck. Not many dare to attempt it and only few find it interesting. If you prepare well you can pass with score ranging from 70-80.

Thanks for your guidance.
The point that I want to make is that theories of International Relations are based on philosophy.
I do not know that this statement totally correct, but studying for 2 months I concludes that if someone can understand philosophy there is huge gains for one's in all others arenas.

You have studied IL as well? I have gone through syllabus of both subjects. Philosophy is base for many theories of not only IR but also other theories as well but it is not a subject which everyone can prepare believe me. I know many toppers have attempted this subject and if I am not wrong it was subject of many top candidates of 2014. The thing is that even they have said the subject is not for everybody and only few find it interesting. In CSS, we have to prepare subjects which we find interesting and we have aptitude for them by keeping scoring trend in mind. Candidate must decide himself.
