Well, its depends on how you think, feel, relate, and judge things. To improve you analytical skills, you can read articles, watch talk shows of some good anchors, read reports of different think tanks and then make your opinion on the basis of your knowledge. Discussion with friends on different international events and issues can also be very helpful for you. Avoid pseudo intellectuals.

Very very good question.
Here is my minimal understanding about your question.

What works for me , I am gonna to share here.
Remember "5WS " and "1H" formula.
I mean, while reading or watching any documentary movie, kept this thing in your mind.
1.Why I am reading this all stuff?
2.What is something good inside this whole material?
3.where i can appply this useful information as i am extracting from the paper?
4.When to use all facts and figure appropriately?
5.which thing is essential and without it my solution to many of problems won't be possible?
Lastly
6.How can i gather the sufficient material to support my arguments?
Just stick to the scheduled of "ws and hs" questions, inshallah, you will develop strong analytical abilities.

Hey man, the answer to these questions are very subjective in nature and may vary from person to person.Like am a leftist, so try to interrogate any passage within my own perspective.

Consider this topic, secularism the solution to Muslim worlds problem that am I recently probing at this forum.
1.Why I am reading this whole stuff?
Ans: I wanted to see the opinions of masses, since through this forum I can interact with peoples opinion directly and on the basis of theirs suggestion i have drawn out this conclusion that religion is still an important chessplayer in deciding the fate of humanity. Ideology and dogmatism may perhabs as well.
2.What is something good inside this whole material?

Redefiners good explanation and I have noted down some of his points that inshallah I will use at their appropriate places.
Similarly, I read about all azhar unis progressive effort in uniting tue muslim world nd hence I quoted it in that section.
3.where i can appply this useful information as i am extracting from the paper?
Hung!
Varies from situation to situation and events to events.I would rather turn the arguments into persuasion and hence appropriately fix them but again depending on the situation.
Like in dawn I studied the poor performance of council of Islamic ideology and I stocked in that material into my argument.
4.When to use all facts and figure appropriately?
One of the reason of Muslim ummahs downfall is poor economy and I argued with facts and figures.
5.which thing is essential and without it my solution to many of problems won't be possible?

My assertion: secularism
Lastly
6.How can i gather the sufficient material to support my arguments?

Obviously, when it is supported by facts and figures and research based material than it definitely deserves some good conclusion which is needed to be answered by this question.

The place where i augmented all these 5ws and 1h questions are mentioned here.

And I hope your query is now finally gotten fix up.

URsula has elaborated the process of analytical thinking in a very lucid and easy manner. I would like to add further:

Work on your habit of "Reading between the lines". There is something is front of you that writer has said, mentioned in words. There is something that he has left for you to be discovered. There is something that he has implied for you to refer.... That's where you judge, derive, make your point.... It's the same as one's body language..... A person is telling something to you with his words and telling even more with his body language...... you understand the body language, you get the whole message... Voila....

Next thing is try to put yourself in Writer's shoes. Try to imagine every next line before reading that and picture will get clear to you. By this technique, you will get additional benefit of "focusing" and it will develop your interest.....

I do hope upper mentioned words will help some one, any one......
