Default My story of CSS and Success

Last year when I cleared the written part of the CSS exam, I was pretty upbeat and had this air of boastfulness in my demeanor. After all I had achieved something, which a lot of young, intelligent and able minds aspire to achieve. This arrogance of sorts stayed with me for a while, though I pretended to be humble and attributed my success to prayers and luck etc. But honestly, deep inside me I was thinking of myself as someone superior from the mere mortals. I think such self-styled superiority syndrome, might have taken over most of the successful candidates if they are honest in realizing their true felling.

This feeling stayed till something happened on the day I went for the medical exam. People who have gone through the process would recall that in Islamabad the medical tests were held in National Institute of Handicapped. Since I was a little afraid and still am afraid of the process of letting a needle actually enter my flesh for the purpose of collecting a blood sample, I was fairly rattled and did not pay much attention to ambience of the hospital.

I came out of the room after giving away the sample of my blood with a certain pride in my step (like that of a warrior who comes back from a battle he won) and had further immersed into the superiority complex and the act of “CSS-vainglory” because I felt now I am a step closer to being a CSP. Just when I reached the end of the corridor, a child of around 10 years old, deaf and dumb, convulsively moving around in the corridor passed me, with his mother clutching onto his hand in desperation and pain. The expression on her face was as if she was pleading to God, “Oh God! Just make my child healthy, intelligent, sharp and a high achiever, may be just like these CSS-qualifiers who have come for their medical exams.”

That was the moment I realized how stupid I am to think that my success is my doing, that child could have been me .I realized that I have achieved nothing; all of this stuff is a blessing. How uneducated I was after so many years of education and still am. . I stand humbled; my head hangs in shame for all those moments of false pride I spent

Last year in Ramadan, all the aspirants of CSS 2008 must have prayed for success, so this Ramadan its time for gratitude and realizing that “we are blessed for a reason and the reason is to be grateful to Him and to help out the less privileged because we have been given their share, so that we can reach to them and let them have what is actually theirs, if we manage to do it, that’s the achievement to be proud of.

P.S This Ramadan, try to be an achiever
