Surely your background in Journalism may help you alot in your preparation for CSS. Your subject combination seems to be good one. But you will have to allocate ample time for your subjects to get a better score.

Well, I don't think CSS is necessarily the best career in life. It does have its own merits and demerits. There may be many other career options available which may be better than CSS in some respects. CSS is not a career in which one can have a huge income which is possible in being Electronic Media Journalist or many other careers. It all depends upon individual preferences. If you want to earn money, CSS may not be a good option for you. If you want authority / power to serve others without much concern for money, CSS may be the better choice.

Brother, I would suggest you to attempt Islamiat in English if you are comfortable with this. Although, I myslelf attempted it in Urdu but I have observed that candidates who attempt it in English usually get substantially higher marks than those attempting in Urdu.

Islami Nazria e Hayat by Prof. Khursid Ahmad (Its English version is also available)

You should visit relevant threads in Islamiat Section on this forum for more suggested books and techniques to attempt paper.

@Irfan Rauf

Thanks brother!
Your subject combination is fine. You should allocate time on daily basis for your studies. Like you may allocate two hours 9-11 PM on daily basis for your studies and then on weekends utilize full days for studies. Also you will have some other calendar holidays which you should exploit in best way. Try to take off from your office for 15-30 days prior to exam. If you consistently follow this pattern, I am sure you will be able to cover syllabus in almost 9 months remaining for the exam.
I also worked on the same lines and utilized the spare time which I had on week ends for studies. I sacrificed many social events, recreational trips, get togethers with my friends to get maximum out of available time.

Brother, its a misconception that SBP employees get free by 2 or 3 PM. We work from 9 to 5.30. In my case, after leaving office at 5.30 I go to IBA to take my MBA classes starting at 6 and ending at 9.30. It takes me almost an hour to reach my residence from IBA. It is my daily routine. The same routine I had to follow during my CSS preparation. I used to study from 11 PM to 2 AM on daily basis. I had saturday and Sunday off, so I studied almost 8-10 hours on these days.

In 2008, I was also working in MCB as a Trainee Officer when I qualified CSS in my first attempt. But you are right, its really difficult to concentrate on your studies while being in commercial bank due to its hectic routine. I advise you to continue your studies by exploiting whatever time you have on your hand, then apply for non-paid leave for 2-3 months before the exam. They should not have much problem with non-paid leave. Take your manager/boss into confidence that you will be needing 2-3 months leave by December 2012 etc.
