Totally agree with your advice. I for one did not study for my first attempt, but during my university education and my overall general interest, I have developed the 3 things you have mentioned above. Indeed, knowing your subject i.e. the basics are essential, but textbook learning is not enough. You have to be analytical, apply what you have learned to real life scenarios, be it an economic theory or a psychological theory. Theories always lack something, they do not cater to every exception. Knowing those exceptions is when your analysis and marks lie.

Like I said, I did not study for my first attempt, but what I realised was that it not just about how much you have learned, but how to apply what you have learned. CSS exam questions are very generic, especially in compulsory subjects. So whenever you learn something or read something, do not take it on face value, every piece you will read will have a writer bias. Even facts are not truly 'facts' as the saying goes 'winners write history'.

Its a sad state of Pakistani education when students despite being Masters and Phd holders in their fields still sometimes lack these basic skills sets, which you learn around the time of your under graduate degree in most universities around the world.

Congratulations on your results, and I must say this is the first piece of advice that is actually worth something for the rest of your life and just for a competitive examination.

Mr Daniyal Ahmad

I liked your approach. I followed it in previous year PMS and it worked, i qualified PMS and now waiting for my final result. I prodigiously used quotations from movies and documentaries.I read poetry of khalil jibran,Rumi,Alarabi,Rabia al basri,Iqbal etc and it succoured me in my essay and PA paper.Book reviews of renowned authors was very beneficial for my compulsory papers. Although Philosophy was not one of my subject, but i read it which further expanded my purview.
I would like to add here that " Try to be different ", and sometimes to be critical, no one was perfect, you must understand the other side of picture. days are gone when you can't say anything against the "ideology of Pakistan" and can't criticize the lies in our history books, but criticism must be constructive and your approach must be optimistic (especially for PA,CA,Islamiat and essay paper)

CSS was not about reading books, it was not about preparing notes, rather it was about three major skills. One was the ability to write, the second was the ability to think and the third was the ability to speak. With these broader goals, I set out to read quality books and magazines that improved my expression. Moreover, I saw movies, painting, listened to music, solved puzzles, undertook GRE to increase analytical skills. I knew that achieving success in competitive exams was to be closer to perfection.

My four pronged strategy worked as in a single year, I managed to secure Fulbright scholarship, got allocated to PSP in CSS, cleared PMS and also managed to secure BS - 17 job as instructor in MPDD, the apex training body of Punjab Government.

My only advise is don't cram stuff, don't prepare notes, get the skills and you'll sail through. This piece of advise is not relevant to CSS but applicable to all aspects of life. Also, try to interact with all hues and shades of people, try to have novel experiences, test the boundaries of your sleep, patience, pain etc. All these things enhance our threshold level and broaden horizon. As mentioned, I had a totally different approach to CSS and it did work!!!
Daniyal ahmed very well said my friend couldnt agree more with you. Im sure many people here would benefit because of you. However i believe it is of core essence that one goes for quality knowledge. You can play woth words if you have good expression but if coupled with sound knowledge i believe anybody can pull it off.

Having said that i would like to know your insight on the reformation of syllabus.

Regards.

Default How to write?

Writing is a skill that is acquired after a lot of arduous struggle. There are no short cuts, the process is painstaking and involves serious commitment. To begin with, you need to have an adequate "supply' of words. For this you need to learn words, you've gotta go through word smart and Barron's word lists to have the repository of words in your arsenal. These are the bullets through which you will fire the ideas of reason. After you have a vast array of words at your disposal, ideas and thoughts will unravel. You will start to comprehend things. Once, you understand things, you'll question and ponder over problems. The best approach is to take 'for' and 'against' stance on any topic. This will allow you to have a more well rounded, complete and comprehensive picture of the problem. Each year debaters perform exceedingly well in CSS examination, this is because they have the art of elaborating ideas on either side. Hegel a philosopher said that every idea starts with a thesis ( a preposition) and follows an anti thesis ( a negation). However, at a later time the thesis and anti thesis merge or synthesize into a whole or synthesis. According to Hegel the synthesis was the higher truth because it contained the good points of both thesis and anti thesis. Hence, try to give both sides of perspective and then integrate them into a unified whole. Truth is never at the extremes it is somewhere in between. . Also, try to take contrarian stance, take up positions that are not straight forward, defy conventions but be rational.

For the benefit of everyone in this forum, I will share a couple of pages that I believe can improve someone's writing skills by at least 30 - 40 percentage points. These are humble suggestions, I don't want to sound like Aristotle but I genuinely want to help others. Most of the people are unable to pass through because they don't have proper guidance. I will try to be of source of comfort to you.If I can't help fellow aspirants, how will I help my country men as a PSP? We should help others wherever possible and this is my very ordinary attempt at it. My respect to all.

Hey Daniyal,
Can you suggest us books for all the compulsory subjects as we new aspirants know nothing about the quality books and qualtity material and we need a quality push?
Kindly suggest us.
Thanks

I have read about Hegel's philosophy. The thing is that I know many good words, but when I begin to write only thing that comes on paper is pretty simple and basic. And when I have written I keep thinking Okay I could've used this or that word. But it happens all the time.
I am a good debater. Most of the times I win.But I'm just not able to write like that.I mean my arguments will be really compelling but my sentences will not be.What to do about it?
