Did you use maps and flow charts?I mean in History paper and Pakistan Affairs?I really need to know about that because they are so Hard.
How did you approach current affairs?I read Dawn and The Guardian. Is that enough? What did you read?
In 2014, answer sheets were lined. No, I didn't draw any maps and honestly speaking I don't think there's ample time for drawings (not in my case atleast).
Dawn and Guardian alone are not enough. You should expand your range. I personally read Dawn from Pakistani newspapers and read articles from Time, FP, Foreign Affairs, CFP and basically anything that seemed interesting.

I agree with you on various points like there must be a flexibility in our time table.... You are right expression is highly necessary for CSS....... Most of the people need to work on it...........

I got encouragement from this point that we should rely on other sources too except books e.g. Net, Newspaper etc.

Break is also necessary for the success.

Thank you so very much for sharing your experience Sir
Thank you, I am glad I could help.

Thank you.. For US history, I referred to a book "History of USA" available online on US State department website. Also, a history channel documentary "The story of us" and youtube for specific topics such as US Presidents, Slavery, US Constitution etc.

For US history, some topics need more attention than others such as War of independence, Constitutional development, slavery, civil war, westward expansion, US Presidents (12-15 most repeated and their achievements) etc. considering there's repetition. Also, 1 or 2 questions are from contemporary issues which you would have covered already since you're preparing for Current Affairs as well.

But, it is better to cover all basis and therefore you must go through all important topics.

Question Books for I.R

Respected Marri sir, I oblige your views and guidance techniques. A lot of prayers for your future endeavors!

As the syllabus has been expanded now and the subject now consists two hundred marks, which books should the aspirants now consult for I.R preparation? Although, I follow Dawn, Project Syndicate, FP and sometimes Financial Times among other online sources, but, I'm facing problems in the selection of books. I don't have educational background of I.R, but I've opted it after the revised scheme of syllabi.

So, lets cut to the chase..There are few things that you must understand:

1- There are no short-cuts to success; you must be willing to work hard for the prize.

2- Manage your time effectively; CSS is all about time management. There are no hard and fast rules; you prefer studying in the morning? Fine. You prefer studying at night? Fine. As long as you’re concentrating, time of the day doesn't matter.

3- Strategize. Take a subject, dissect it! Check syllabus, past papers, current trends and then make a pool of topics. Once you've done that, give yourself a time-frame for completion of subject. Accordingly, make daily tasks and meet them.

4- Don’t cram! Develop analytical skills. Rely on multiple sources of information i.e. books, newspapers, magazines, journals, internet, television. Once you have a stack of information, think over it, filter things, keep the necessary stuff with you and eliminate unnecessary mumbo jumbo!

5- Don’t rely on notes prepared by academies. Many people cram the same things and you’ll not be doing differently! Research, make your own notes, do it in a bullet format so that you can access them easily and revise them when the D-day nears.

6- Persistence is the key to success, you’ll have days where you’d want to quit, take a day off, and start fresh the next morning, keep telling yourself “It’s worth the trouble”.

7- Treat yourself! Watching a good movie, hanging out with friends on weekends, eating your favorite food and listening to your favorite music are some ways of treating yourself. Enjoy yourselves while at it!

8- It is the process that makes you better! Once you take up this task with full zeal, I assure you, you’ll find positive changes in yourself.

9- Keep an open mind and engage in healthy discussions with the intentions of learning !

And last but not the least, help others!
This worked for me, I hope it does for you too.
Goodluck !

Dear Hafiz, as I have stated earlier that you must follow multiple sources, make extensive use of Internet. There are many resources online where you can find material on given topics. Following one single text-book for the entire course might not be feasible.

I would suggest you to go through the subject outlines and take decision accordingly. It is okay if you don't have background in most, you may opt for subjects that you find interesting. As far as your background is concerned, you may opt for Public Administration, Isl. History, Persian etc.

Thank you Maryam,

Essay paper is probably the most important paper of CSS considering majority of aspirants do not make it through that paper. So here are a few tips.

1- Always choose topic according to your strength. Your concepts about that particular topic must be clear. Before you start writing, give yourself sufficient time to brainstorm on that particular topic. Use backpage for drawing a rough structure.

2- Read the topic carefully and write specifically on the topic
e.g. If the topic is "Great nations win without fighting" you must not start writing pages on 'great nations' instead the focus should revolve around whether great nations win without fighting or not.

3- Introduction paragraph must begin with a 'hook' (something that captivates the readers attention), followed by your thesis statement and brief introduction to the topic where you give reader a hint about your direction for the essay.

4- Your ideas must compliment each other. Each sentence of a particular paragraph must be in sync and ideas must not be scattered or abrupt. One paragraph, one idea.

5- How well you convince your reader about your point of view will decide whether you pass or fail that paper. So work on your analysis skills, use statistics, quotes, facts etc to augment your point of view.

6- In concluding paragraph, you must NEVER present a new idea. Conclusion is merely to sum up your essay.

Dear, the topic was "war on terror has led to human rights abuse" and NOT "causes of war on terror". What you should've focused on was whether war on terror has contributed to human rights abuse? Yes? No? How? What types of Human rights abuse? What should be done to avoid such abuse? and conclusion.

Thanks a lot,

If you have business studies background then this subject is easier. The general sections include Management, Marketing, Finance with a touch of HRM and Accounting.

In management focus revolves around Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling.

In marketing, broadly speaking, strategies, mix, sales related questions

In finance, ratios, NPV, IRR, PBP etc.

Cost accounting cycle, budgetary analysis (basics) also form part of course.

This is offcourse a very basic review, the subject contents are quite detailed.

As far as books are concerned, you may consult standard BBA (H), MBA course books for aforementioned.
