It is hard to digest that he passed the exam merely by taking interest in the newspaper only. I agree that newspaper has a huge role in passing with good marks but what about subjects that have nothing to do with newspapers? Didn't he study optionals from books? He is the second position holder and he surely must have studied a lot for optionals from books instead of newspapers.
