How tough is the PAS job and is it good in facilities after FSP?
 

Hello respected Seniors.
My top choice is FSP due to its unmatched perks and previliges, excellent pay and a depression free life in EU Americas etc.

[B][/B]I wanted to know is PAS a good choice after FSP???
After some research I have come to know that life is very tough in PAS.
There is no leisure time for one's own life. You are posted in under developed areas. There are no holidays whatsoever. Even pay is not good. There is alot of political/departmental and sicial pressure. There have been cases of many people leaving PAS.
Therefore, I am discouraged about PAS and now seek IRS and Customs MlCG as options next to FSP.
And if really there are so many problems in PAS as compared to benefits, why it is still no 1 choice (taking power out if equation)?

Its your choice mate.No doubt life as PAS officer is difficult given the fact with great powers come great responsibility.But fact of matter is that do some introspection regarding what exactly you want from service.FSP is no doubt a good service it may offer you quality life but you wont have any social recognition in your own backyard.Who told you that you would always land at EU countries or Americas:) Do some research about that as well.PAS is tough but its horizontal and vertical mobility along with its traditions,legacy and diversity it offers is unmatched.If you ask me i shall always recommend PAS but again it boils down to individual choices.Do some research and choose your service groups after analyzing pros and cons of them.Hope that answers your query.

Thank You for your reply Sir. No doubt DMG is a very prestigious group and has social recognition and authority but iski qeemat bht bari ha, i read a few things abt DMG on this forum and I have been told as well by some ppl follow things; if u could clarify Sir:

1.There is extreme political/job pressure on DMG officer
2. He cant have leisure time, 24/7 busy..even sunday not free??
3. No holidays at all. Not free even on Eid and other ocassions
4. Salary is minimal, good if one is single but with family and kids it gets tough.
5. DMG officers are posted in far flung areas, many even live at a different city whereas family lives at different city for years
6. They face alot of inquires in courts/ from NAB as we read in papers/ in departments
7. Their personal and family life suffers and there is no peace of mind in police or PAS
8. PAS is like Police service 24/7 in pressure
9. Without political connections, life is v.difficult
10. There are alot of people who left PAS after a few years of service??
11. Life threats
12. Alot if responsibility, mistakes (which are natural in any career) will lead to serious inquiries

Sir if the aforementioned info is true, is it not a very very big price for social recognition and authority???
And apart from social recognition and authority, what benefits PAS offers??

Haseeb I was asking myself many of these questions before deciding for going for CSS. The following are my impressions.

The PAS is a well balanced group, you get to work in the field in your career initially and opportunities to work on policy and many other issues later in your career, several officers also get postings abroad with the UN and other organizations. Many PAS officers also get scholarships to attend some of the best universities in the world. Finally, this is Pakistan, and having connections makes life easier in so many ways.

Pressure exists as does corruption, but despite that many good officers are doing good work, even enjoying themselves.

The pay may be low, but you will be provided with a house, a car, and servants. Taking all that into consideration your total package while still inferior to the corporate sector, is pretty decent.

On a side note I asked you a query in another section which i hope you will answer here. You mentioned your cousin scored 142 in British History in 2015. Could you elaborate how he answered questions?

For British History, he used to make alot of headings in his questions.

Still my Q's remains unanswered. IF for sicial recognition and authirity, THERE ARE SO MANY AFOREMENTIONED PROBLEMS IN PAS, then even IRS & Customs seem a better choice than PAS.
I wonder why its top choice of most of ppl for facing so many problems just for socisl recognition??

Haseebb for many people it is not primarily about social recognition. As a PAS officer you have power and authority over a wide range of issues, even at the start of your career. You really get to make an impact in people's lives. Though corruption and interference are present.

On the other Hand in IRS you're only dealing with Taxation issues, and in customs your handling Tax issues (a function rapidly being taken over by IRS) and some basic law enforcement issues. Plus its not like customs is some sort of tension free group, it is notorious for being the group with the most corruption and political interference. Something I can verify personally as my family is friends with a few customs officers.


I will add that the PAS has the fastest promotions and the most BS 22 seats, and the best facilities, things which will matter a lot in the future.

Haseeb, most of the people choose PAS because of their families. Parents or family members convince most of the candidates to choose PAS due to its social value in our society.

Yes, Life is not easy in PAS.

You must have a certain temperament if you choose PAS, e.g u are very social or u want to do public service, you dont get depressed in pressure situations, u like thrill and adventure.

If u want a comfortable life in good and comfortable working conditions, then PAS is not a good option. Consider these groups as your top choice:

Foreign Service (the best and unmatched quality life).

MLCG is a also excellent choice for peaceful life and living in good sorroundings

Customs, IRS, even railways is option

Dont do band wagoning like rest of the candidates, choose your group acvording to what u desire in life

if I had to rank the groups in terms of indicators like: power, social recognition, money making, promotion chances etc I would go in the order of:

1. PAS ( head and shoulders above the rest)


2. Customs
3. Police



4. IRS
5. PAAS

6-12: don't care.

Trust me, no group comes close to PAS especially, when it comes to postings of grade 20 and above. Currently, ALL of the federal secretaries are from PAS.

Honestly, Foreign service is terribly overrated, if you are male and have no references you will sent to a 3rd world country for most of your career. Most of the good posts are taken by females, army personnel, journalists (why?) and politicians.

And I agree with the user who said PAS is risky and requires a cool temperament and other qualities like boot polishing, corruption and signing any file that's put in front of you, regardless of consequences.

Take the example of Sajjad Bhutta, who was the blue eyed boy of PPP, as soon as they came to power in'08 he was appointed DCO Lahore, and ruled the city like a king. He fell out of favour when he refused to stop the long march in 2010 and was made an OSD. He was superceded for promotion and has been stuck in grade 19 while seeing his juniors get promoted and enjoy good postings.

I get terribly surprised when people comment about foreign service without even knowing it.

OK lets suppose worst case scenario of FSP Vs PAS:

FSP OFFICER

An FSP guy posted in 3rd world, like Sudan for 5 years. He will live in Kharotum (Capital city) and its beautiful. He gets 3000 $ cash, the local currency is nothing as compared to dollars. The family of the officer lives with him. His kids go to best school of kharotum. They attend 5 star hotels. After 6 years, he returns with 1 crores legally. He lives a peaceful life with peace of mind.

PAS OFFICER
A PAS officer is posted out of province in an under developed and remote and under threat area . He lives there for 5 years. His family cant live there with him. He is alone and isolated. His life is under threat. He faces psychological problems alone because he faces threats from smugglers, politicians & mafia. He has no peace just depression is his fate. He gets 50,000rs monthly for dat lol. Seriously???? When he returns to his city, legally he has 5 lacs savings maximum.

NOW HOW IS LOGICALLY PAS EVEN CLOSER TO FSP?????
