Shakespeare once said, "WHAT'S IN A NAME? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

Basically, the Indian Civil Service (ICS) , also known once as Imperial Civil Service was predecessor of the Civil Service of Pakistan and District Management Group. After Indian independence, the ICS component ceded to Pakistan was renamed as the Pakistan Administrative Service. Later it was named the Civil Service of Pakistan. In 1954, an agreement was reached between the Governor General of Pakistan and the governors of the provinces to constitute an All-Pakistan service. Under administrative reforms of 1973, the name of Civil Service of Pakistan was changed to All-Pakistan Unified Group (APUG) of which the DMG and Police Service of Pakistan were major components.
Now the latest move is actually restoring its old name which was there in 1947 onwards til early years of 1950s. Moreover, its not like that the mere name change has nothing to do with the cadre. "Pakistan Administrative Service" acknowledges the outreach and service of the cadre throughout the breadth and width of Pakistan. Similarly what will one feel if Police Service of Pakistan is renamed as District Police Service or Pakistan Custom Service renamed as District Custom Service. You see its ridiculous to attach the word district with the service whose officers spend only initial few years at district level.

Pakistan Administrative service sounds logical and appropriate as DMG had the impression that DMG officer are to found in Districts only as the name denotes but actually they are the nuts and bolts of state adminstration so new name is good for me but it is not good enough to have an impact on my preference list as FSP will always spearhead my preference list.........

well everyone will get used to PAS as well. One more thing is that now on international forum it would be easy and self explanatory to be member of Pakistan Administrative Service.

PMG is already being used by Postal services of Pakistan as Post Master General.
