History Of National Police Academy (NPA)

The National Police Academy is the country s Premier Institution for education and training of middle and senior level law enforcement officers, especially officers of the Police Service of Pakistan. It was established in 1978, under a Presidential order, replacing the Police Academy in Sardahh, former East Pakistan. National Police Academy is an autonomous body, administered by a Board of Governors headed by Minister of Interior and senior police officers, civil servants and persons of eminence from the private sector.

[B]Faculty [/B]

The faculty of the Academy mainly consist of senior police officers having varied filed experience who are expert in their relevant fields. To further enrich the training programme, guest speakers from various renowned institutions and all walks of life are invited to give varied experience for probationers.

[B]Training Facilities[/B]

The training activities are monitored by the NPA. Lectures rooms, syndicate rooms, officers mess and library are the main facilities provided by the Academy. Sports facilities like Tennis Courts and horse riding is also available for the trainee officers. the Academy is catering for all these facilities at soan training wing and would also be available at its newly under construction complex at Sector H-11, Islamabad.

[B]Courses Delivered[/B]

The Academy has taken up the task of running various police related courses through out the year. Periodical deliverance of the ICC (Initial Command Course) designed for the newly appointed Assistant Superintendents of Police are the main responsibility of the NPA. These officer of Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) are selected through a competitive examination, held by Federal Public Service Commission Pakistan. Few officers are also inducted from the Armed Forces. Besides ICC, the NPA has conducted various other courses, such as VVIP security course. the Academy with the collaboration of other international agencies has also conducted various courses on policing subjects.

[B]Central Planning & Training Unit[/B]

[B]Background [/B]

The Central Planning & Training Unit (CPTU) operates under the umbrella of the National Police Academy and is headed by a Director of the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). This unit came into being in October 1996 and was established as a a result of a joint venture between Government of Pakistan and United Kingdom. the goal of the unit was to develop the concept of the CPTU, and assist in preparation of courses / material relevant to modern policing and the needs of the communities served by the Pakistan Police Force. Initially CPTU was manned by the police officers from Pakistan and UK but since the expiry of the project and subsequent departure of the UK officer, CPTU has been manned completely by Pakistani Police officers.

The following are the three main features of CPTU:- [LIST][*]Training Needs Analysis (TNA)[*]Curriculum Design (CD)[*]Trainer Development Programme (TDP)[/LIST]So far the project has conducted TNA for the following roles / ranks; [LIST][*]TNA of Superintendents of Police (SSP)[*]TNA of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO)[*]TNA of Inspector (Station House Officers (SHOs)[/LIST]At present the TNA of the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASIs) is in progress.

Based on authentic TNA, so far CPTU has designed the following curricula for various ranks. [LIST][*]Initial Command Course (ICC)[*]Trainers Development Programme (TDP)[*]Training Managers Programme (TMP)[/LIST][B]Courses Delivered[/B]

CPTU have so far delivered several courses of Trainers Development Programme in which a number of trainers from all major police training establishment of Pakistan have been trained in modem concept of police training.
