NATO is a military alliance established by North Atlantic Treaty (also called the Washington Treaty) of April 4, 1949, while the ISAF is a Nato-led security mission that is established by the United Nation Security Council in December 2001.

NATO is a collective security Organization formed in 1949 mainly to deter Soviet Expanisionism in the context of post-world war 2 situation, between US and Western European states, later WARSAW pact was formed by Soviet and other eastern Europian states to counter it.
While ISAF is a UN mandated Security mission formed particularly to assist Afghanistan in making a secure environment for transfer of power from Nato led states to Afghanistan.

NATO is military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949.

ISAF is NATO led security mission in Afghanistan that was established by the United Nations Security Council in December 2001 by Resolution 1386, as envisaged by the Bonn Agreement.

NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium, one of the 28 member states. NATO has its own parliamentary assembly for decisions

ISAF is just to train the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and assist Afghanistan in rebuilding key government institutions but is also engaged in the 2001-present war with insurgent groups.

The initial ISAF headquarters (AISAF) was based on 3rd UK Mechanised Division, led at the time by Major General John McColl
