I picked this sentence because this is the simplest of all. The word bitter has many meanings. One of them is the taste bitter, another is the feeling of animosity like in bitter rivalry, another is harsh and severe. Now, upon looking at the sentence, we come to know that the last meaning fits here the most. That's what the examiner wants to check, if you can comprehend a passage properly. Hope that will answer your query.
thanks a lot. but as u said bitter have several meanings so we have to write the most suiting meaning of context. it mean the contexual meaning should be one of the meanings , or we can build or give it our?own meaning.
like for example
Allah have given us many things in pairs like
two eyes , two hands, two ears and [abcd] foot.
so here if we look the word #abcd have no meaning at all but if we see it in context then we will opt for "two"
so basically my point of asking is that it is must that we will find the underlined words meaning and then will see to put suitable or we can assume from ourselves which depends on the sense of sentence .correct me please..

Again, if you look at the structure of this sentence, Allah has given us many things in "pairs" like... a statement has been made and then examples are given. The word pair already means two. So we have two eyes, two hands, two ears and two feet. Those who comprehend the sentence will write two.
But, at the same time, you can't assign some arbitrary meaning to a word. It must be one of its meanings. Here [abcd] is more of a blank and not a word meaning case. By the way, that kind of comprehension is rarely seen where you have to fill in a word.
