Need guidance in Reading Skills

I have started reading for CSS2018, but I often do not understand the idea or exact meaning of sentence mostly complex sentences like when reading Dawn Opinion.
Kindly guide me that how I could fix this issue.

And suggest me a good book for understanding complex sentences, types of sentences.

Regards

I am guessing that your basics are very weak.

First of all, read a book wren and martin and focus on phrases, clauses and their types e.g prepositional phrases.absolute phrases, participle phrases, infinitive phrases, gerund , adjective clause(relative clauses) and adverbial Clauses.

Learn how they function in a sentence.

For more complex grammr, read Michael swan practical English usage.

And use the internet too.

Read carefully and when you see a particular expression search it on the internet.

But remember phrases, clauses, and other expression works as a noun, adjective ,and adverb, with the exception of few.

So learn it in a way by focusing on how an expression work in a sentence.

Read ,read and read. Don't lose heart, even you are unable to understand any word, phrase , sentence. second thing, try to avoid net-speak words while messaging. Try to write complete sentence with simply adding one new word in your regular life, time to time. You will see huge difference after sometime. So keep your self motivated.

Yes, it also happened to me when I started reading newspaper. It's been more than a year since I got into the preparation of this exam and I faced the similar problem as you're currently facing, but I gradually overcame it by sticking myself to reading and just reading. Even though in the beginning, I had a lot of difficulty interpreting the words and my grammar was not as good as it is now but I kept my reading activity going on. I used to use a dictionary a lot like whenever I would see a word which was unknown to me then I would consult that quickly with dictionary, whenever I would find any grammatical confusion, then I would immediately look for the explanation by searching on google. I kept the cycle going until I started having less difficulty while reading. And I want to suggest you that do not stop your reading habit for the sake of approach of learning English first then rest afterwards. Read a lot along with improving vocabulary and grammar. Install a dictionary extension in your browser for quickly getting the meaning of a word. Learn everything with interest and you'll find yourself in a state where you feel much improved in contrast to what you are now.

Hi Waqar, I faced a similar problem, but instead of English I had to improve my Urdu. Nevertheless, I think the method can be applied to English as well.

Use the internet edition of the paper at Dawn.com, and make use of a good online dictionary. I recommend dictionary.com because it includes sentences that show how the word is used. A lot of the time the literal meaning of a word and its usage are very different. Be sure to really understand the word and how it is used. If you simply read the definition you wont see much improvement.

The next step is to record the word in a word document, copy and paste the sentence you read in dawn which included the word, and write down your own meaning of the word. By your own meaning i mean write down in simple terms what you understand about how the word is used. By having a record of the word, the sentence you first read it in, and a simple definition you will be more likely to truly understand the word and its usage in the long run.

Keep doing this and you will build up a huge list, which you will revise every now and again. Slowly but surely you will see the improvement.

This is better than using the hard copy of the newspaper because you can simply copy/paste the word. It makes things much quicker.

Most importantly don't be discouraged. Many people have overcome the English Hurdle and aced this exam, InshAllah you will too.
