Post Essay for CSS/PMS Aspirants: SCIENCE WITHOUT CONSCIENCE TURNS A FAIRY INTO A FURY

SCIENCE WITHOUT CONSCIENCE TURNS A FAIRY INTO A FURY
Prof. Muzaffar Bokhari

A tremendous wave of scientific progress has threatened to engulf the small voice of our conscience. Everywhere today we find the conquest of nature being carried to its logical conclusions. The mysteries of the depths of the oceans, the impenetrable jungles of Africa, the impassable deserts of the Sahara and the Gobi have all been laid bare by science. The Earth has been yielding her precious stores of gold and silver. Coal mines, oil wells and gas reserves have been exploited with success. Plenty seems to replace scarcity of means. With such scientific explorations, the old idea of the golden age of mankind seems to begin anew with its splendour and blessedness. And yet somehow or other, the promise of science is showing signs of unfulfilment. The Fairy Goldmother of Science appears to be inclined to turn herself into a Fury of malignity. When people demand bread, they are given bayonets. How are we to account for such a perversity of achievements? What is it that has turned the Fairy into Fury? The answer seems to be that science is proceeding far ahead of the conscience of mankind. Intellectual progress is getting ahead of the spirituality of mankind. The age of machines is making its own inventors no better than machines. That, in short, is the cause of this perversion of scientific progress.
Is not science contributing to human welfare and happiness? This is the question which the supporters of science often ask. They point out with pride the comforts and luxuries that are flooding the markets of our day. In contrast to this, they also refer to the days before science when men led a life of beasts and barbarians. Science, they say with good reason, has minimized danger, eliminated disease, enhanced human life, released the powers of production and brought the world to a stage where it is possible to live in sufficient security and happiness. In medical science, they say, mankind has found one of the greatest blessings of life. Has it not given eyes to the blind, ears to the deaf, limbs to the limbless and tongues to the dumb? Has it not prolonged life beyond the average span of a few decades? What more does one want from science than these miracles she has performed, these wonders she has effected? This is a formidable list of blessings. To all of which, however, another list might be added and presented for comparison and contrast. That will be a list of those inventions and discoveries of science necessary to mention when such claims are made on behalf of science.
Agreed that science has done all these wonders. But are there not more formidable wonders which science has also done? Is not that poisonous gas one of its wonders? Is not the malignity of modern warfare the result of scientific inventions and discoveries? The death-dealing weapons of destruction, the bombs and beyonets, the U boat and torpedos, the tanks and the machine guns – are not these and a host of other efficient destroyers also the achievements of science? In fact, it might be said without a moment’s hesitation that science has shown more inventiveness in the production of destructive weapons than in all those healing discoveries of which certainly we must be grateful and thankful. What is the result when we place these two lists of scientific achievements side by side? There is only one inevitable conclusion that science has proved to be more a curse than a blessing.
How is it to be explained? To what should we trace the perversion of scientific progress? The reason for all this perversion seems to be the disparity between scientific genius and conscienceless mankind. Conscience is that still, small voice within us whose call is heard only in moments of calm reflection and contemplation. Such calmness is almost impossible in this age of ours whose ideal is speed and yet more speed. How can we hear that still small voice of our conscience amid the roaring machines and thundering aeroplanes of our mechanized civilization? That voice within us is the voice which tells us how to distinguish between right and wrong. Without its guidance, it is impossible for mankind to know what is true and what is false. Hence a mental readjustment and a different orientation are needed to check the destructive potential of science. Science is a power born of knowledge of the laws of nature. Like every other power, it could be used for many purposes -- good, bad and indifferent. Power by itself is no guarantee of human happiness as the present power politics of the West only too well demonstrate. Power must be harnessed to good purposes. To place power into the hands of ruthless adventurers and conscienceless rulers and their cronies is to call for ruin and destruction. Hence it is that science without conscience becomes a Fury malignant in her deeds.
In a word, science has done untold mischief by being abused. Selfish nations have exploited its inventions to rob others of wealth and power. Unscrupulous, ambitious, technically efficient engineers and electricians have sold their inventions to the highest bidder in the market and along with their inventions, they have sold also their soul and conscience to the devil. If mankind is to be led into a higher state of civilization instead of this machine-ridden civilization of ours, we must see to it that power born of science is not placed in the hands of political adventurers.
