Evaluate my precis

Seniors, kindly evaluate my precis; The following passage is from 1989 CSS paper.

"The greatest civilization before ours was the Greek. They, too, lived in a dangerous world. They were a little highly civilized people, surrounded by barbarous and always threatened by the greatest Asian powers, Persia. In the end, they succumbed, but the reason they did was not the enemies outside were strong, but that their spiritual strength had given way. While they had it, they kept Greece unconquered. Basic to all Greek achievements was freedom. The Athenians were only free people in the world. In the great empires of antiquity-Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, and Persia-splendid though they were with riches and immense power, freedom was unknown. The idea of it was born in Greece and with it Greece was able to prevail against all the manpower and wealth arrayed against her. At marathon and at salamis overwhelming numbers of Persians were defeated by small Greek forces. It was proved there that one free man was superior to many submissively obedient subjects of a tyrant. And Athens, where the freedom was the dearest possession, was the leader in those amazing victories.
Greece rose to the very height, not because she was big, she was very small; not because she was rich, she was very poor, not even because she was wonderfully gifted. So doubtless were others in the great empires of the ancient world who have gone their way leaving little for us. She rose because there was in the Greeks the greatest spirit that moves in humanity, the spirit that sets man free."
Greek was greatest civilization and had a highly civilized people.it succeeded to defeat the greatest power persia not because it had strong enemy but lack of spiritual strength caused of their failure. In the reign of of its mother Goddesses Athean, Greek had spiritual strength of freedom however for Athean freedom was theirr beloved passion. They able to overcome all manpower and wealth against her.other rich and great powerful nations like Egypt,Babylon,Assyria and persia were defeated because word freedom was unfamiliar to them. 0 marks, kindly, re-read the precis 10 times as you have not understood it. I will give negative marks on how many grammatical mistakes are there in your summary.

Your precis is not good. The first step is to understand the passage and you havent understood it. In your first line, you say Greece defeated Persia when the passage says Persia defeated Greece.

The next step is to produce the precis which you cannot do correctly until you have understood the meaning of the passage. In addition to that, there are too many grammatical mistakes.

You should work on grammar. The best advice I can give you is read English story books. You will feel the difference in a few months. This method may be too late for CSS though.

Not all the rulers signed the Instrument of Accession at once. Afraid that the Socialist Congress Party would strip him of his amusements, flying, dancing girls and conjuring delights which he had only just begun to indulge since he had only recently succeeded his father to the throne, the young Maharajah of Jodhpur arranged a meeting with Jinnah. Jinnah was aware that both Hindu majority and geographical location meant that most of the Princely states would go to India, but he was gratified by the thought that he might be able to snatch one or two from under Patel ‘s nose. He gave Jodhpur a blank sheet of paper.
‘Write your conditions on that’ he said, 'and I’ll sign it’ Elated, the Maharajab returned to his hotel to consider. It was an unfortunate- move on his part, for V. P. Menon was there waiting for him. Menon’s agents had alerted him to what Jodhpur was up to. He told the young ruler that his presence was requested urgently at viceroy’s House, and reluctantly the young man accompanied him there. The urgent summons had been an excuse, and once they had arrived, Menon had to go on a frantic search for Viceroy, and tell him what had happened. Mountbatten responded immediately. He solemnly reminded Jodhpur that Jinnah could not guarantee any conditions he might make, and that accession to Pakistan would spell disaster for his state. At the same time, he assured him that accession to India would flot automatically mean end of his pleasure. Mountbatten left him alone with Menon to sign a provisional agreement.

All rulers did not agree on instrument of accession instantly.Young Maharajah
scared that congress would destroy all of his pleasure .He concerned Jinnah who entrusted him blank sheet of paper. Menon told Mountbaten about Maharajah's intentions. Mounbatten ensured him that accession of India would not end of his amusement but his accession to Pakistan would destroy his state. He persuaded him to sign provisional agreement with India.

Salam,

I tried to write my precis according to the principles that you all told me.kindly tell me now how it is? & also tell me about its title and size?

Norymberskie Thursday, November 30, 2017 02:26 PM

Regarding the title, I would prefer to have Jodhpur in the title becaues that's what the passage is about. It only talks of one India state so a title of 'India's agreement' doesn't make sense to me. Jodhpur's accession or something on those lines might be a better option.

Your grammar is still not up to the mark. It will only improve gradually so keep reading and doing grammar exercises till the exam.

Now I'll come to the precis itself.

He concerned Jinnah who entrusted him blank sheet of paper. Yes Jinnah handed him a blank sheet of paper but also told him to write down his demands, which you haven't mentioned. Basically what Jinnah did was promise him that whatever he demanded, it would be fulfilled. So you could say 'Jinnah gave the Maharaja an unconditional guarantee'. Remember, the precis should convey the full meaning only. You do not have to use the same words as mentioned in the passage. So when Jinnah tells the Maharaja write your demands on a blank sheet of paper and he'll sign it, he is giving him a guarantee that his demands will be met, without any conditions.

Point out my mistakes

Sir,kindly point out my mistakes from grammer point of view so that, i able to write a good précis & also tell me about the length of my precis. In my previous precis, you said i did not comprehend passage carefully. Now guide me from this point of view i understand it or not?

Norymberskie Thursday, November 30, 2017 11:06 PM

You have understood this passage well.

Young Maharajah "was" scared that congress would destroy all of his pleasure.
I "am" able to write a good précis.
They "were" able to overcome all manpower and wealth.

You are not using the verb 'to be'(is/am/are) correctly. In fact you are not using it at all.
