CSS idioms 2012...with some others
Idioms
In the zone (very focused, increased focus and attention, to put your full attention in sth) You must be in the zone while doing your work. You are always in the zone when you are doing sth with your heart. Don’t try to disturb me, I am in the zone. It’s very difficult to be in the zone when you are doing a couple of things at the same time. Walk through (rehearsal, a through demonstration/explanation, practice slowly) She gave me a walk-through of my duties. At our first rehearsal we walked through the first act of the play. Walking on eggshells (to walk very carefully, being careful with what you are saying, to be very careful with someone because they get upset easily, to be in a delicate situation, to be very diplomatic and inoffensive) You always need to walk on eggshells when talking to her. I was walking on eggshells trying to explain the remark to her without offending her further. CSS-2012 Wool gathering (to engage in fanciful daydreaming, not concentrating on your work, indulge in a fantasy, absent minded) The professors talk was really boring, I found myself wool gathering. Cold comfort (extremely limited sympathy/encouragement) The good news about the economy is cold comfort to people who have lost their jobs. The drop in the unemployment figures is cold comfort to those still looking for work. Walk with God (to teach and live according to the doctrine of faith, to live in obedience to his commands, go in the ways of God) Is an Apostle is one who walks with God? She doesn’t have a job but she spends time with millionaires at the fancy bars (very nice/upscale). On the thin ice (in a risky situation, in danger) His grades are very low in this course. He is on thin ice. You are walking on thin ice. You should be careful! (What you are doing is risky). My mother might have guessed that she was on thin ice there. Unearthly hour (unreasonable, strange, absurd) They arranged to meet the unearthly hour of six in the morning. |
