I also endorse your viewpoint that success or failure is largely dependent on two english papers- Essay,precis and composition. As far as my experience of precis and composition is concerned i solved only five mcq's from objective paper of 20 mcq's though i knew about 18 correct answers but due to my negligence i could't attempt them all. As far as subjective paper is concerned my sequence of attempting the paper was as follows.
I studied all the questions in the paper then decided to attempt as follows.
First i attempted the portion of idioms and grammar
Secondly i attempted the comprehension
Thirdly i attempted the precis writing
Finally i attempted the note writing/ Expansion
I got 43 marks in composition in css-2012 and 45 marks in Essay writing.
