English - The Problem

SALAM..

Afshan

Note the following points

1 All the four skills of english - Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening must be developed simoultaneously.

2 Start from Wren And Martin's "High School English Grammar". Buy its key too. and solve atleast 2 exercises daily.

3 Use a Headfone to listen ARY(Eng. news)/BBC (Not cnn at the beginning). As you listen, try to write down what ever you listen. It will make you concentrate more. Select one presenter as your favourate and try to copy him/her when you speak. This will make you learn some of his/her sentenses and phrases, and would help you improve.

4 Speak English most of the times. Find a friend or two for this purpose.

5 Speak before the mirror. Try to act as an orator before yourself. If you can speak in fron of yourself, you can speak to anyone.

6 Write at least 2 pages daily, and get them checked by someome at ease with english.

Do it for 2 months and that is all..!!
Hardwork, and self confidence is the key.

Do feel free to ask any other queries.

Take care
Allah hafiz

AoA,

agreeing to the views of mohiuddin,

adding something dear afshan u may like to get 'guide to better english by Mr. B.R. Mullick'

and u may use headphone for listening news at beginning, but leave the practice after some time and try to concenterate more and more in open environment

also read articles/opinions/encounter/editorial of the dawn and underline the difficuilt words. you may keep a note book/rough papers with you and write down the difficuilt words there and check out their meaning in the dictionary after reading out the articles

Salaam Fellows,

I believe the guidance required has already been given and its really naive for me to poke my nose into the solved case. But i'll still prefer to continue irrespective of conditions!

Well, all that makes a difference is the TIME the learnt have spent learning. The hint here for you is to waste some time learning english. Learning is an evolutionary practice. You can't become a master over nights. The fellows here are very competent and well-learnt.

I will suggest you to stay around in the company of the well-learnt people. Try reading and writing English from the sources of verified quality (just like www.dawn.com).

Besidse all that... let the time pass. You will start feeling different within a while!

Develop some confidence in yourself and never underestimate yourself!

PS: I developed my english by talking to people in English Chatrooms (don't tell anybody... it was a sheer wastage of time... but today i'm here).

Regards,
Adil Memon

All this was meant to serve no other purpose than to help you!

Dear Bro, adnan the book you have mentioned is not meant for the beginners. It is a valuable knowledge-source nevertheless.

Dear Brother Mohiuddin,

I am so sorry to say that I disagree with you at this point. That book is perfect for any beginner - advanced level guy. Infact, 90% people recommend that book for CSS.

And by casting a glance at sister's (Afshaan's) post, I can envisage that the recommendation is perfect. She has some understanding of English and that book won't be hard enough to swallow.

@ Sister:
One more thing... I forgot to mention in my previous message!

In case you don't have anyone with whom you could practise your spoken english you can load the slot of "INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION" in your "MIND". It helps me a lot, so its another recommendation for you!

Adil Memon

Thanks to all. Now, i will start reading newspapers thoroughly and i will say one thing that it is very difficult for me to hear news. I can't bear it. I am already reading a newspaper, this much news is enough for one day. ;)

Muhammad T S Awan Friday, August 26, 2005 08:47 AM

Dear one must have to read the newspapers as well as hear/watch the news in the t.v. channels, as it provides ready information on various national and international issues, per se the ambit of one's knowledge increases manifold

GAINING ENGLISH SKILL NEEDS "PRACTICE"

Salam!
WELL AFSHAN FIRST DON’T UNDER ESTIMATE URSELF…………………U KNOW I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE COMING UP FROM GOVT SCHOOLS OR VERY ORDINARY LOW STANDARD SCHOOLS WITH FLUENCY AND VERY NICE ACCENT COZ OF CONTINUOUS PRACTICE…………………………ONE OF MY PROFESSORS IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT HAD VERY NICE ACCENT AND ONCE I ASKED HIM HOW HE HAD DEVELOPED THE SKILL AND THE REPLY WAS,”DON’T THINK THAT I AM THE SON OF A LORD WHO HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP AMONG ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLE.I HAVE BEEN A STUDENTS OF “TAAT” SCHOOL AND HAVE MADE MYSELF DISTINGUISHED BY PRACTING & DISPOSING OFF SHYNESS.”
SO DEAR I SUGGEST U SPEAK AS MUCH AS U CAN……………………….WRITE AS MUCH AS U CAN AND …………………….LISTEN AS MUCH AS U CAN…………………………………
PRACTICE MAKES A MAN PERFECT……U WON’T BE ABLE TO LEARN ONLY EITHER BY READING OR WRITING OR SPEAKING.3 OF THEM AT A TIME WILL HELP… ………….THERE ARE PEEPLE WHO GO THROUGH THE WRITTEN EXAMS COZ THEY KNOW HOW TO WRITE AND THEIR GRAMMAR SKILLS ARE SUPERB………………………..BUT THE APPLICATION OF RULES OF GRAMMAR MAKE THEM SUFFER COZ THEY ARE NOT PROVIDED WITH OPPORTUNITIES NEITHER HAVE THEY MADE WAYS FOR THEMSELVES…………………….IF U R AWARE OF UR WEAK AREAS IN ENGLISH KEEP PRACTING AND U WILL FEEL A CHANGE SOON……………..MUHIYUDDIN’S IDEA TO SPEAK IN FRONT OF MIRROR IS EXCELLENT AND I APPROVE OF IT COZ I HAVE PERSONALLY TRIED IT…………………….AND ONE THING MORE WHEN U GET DEPRESSED STAND IN FRONT OF MIRROR AND WEEP AND ENJOY THE FEELING OF RELAXATION AFTER TAKING PITY ON URSELF………….HA HA HA HA………….GOOD LUCK………………………………………………HOPE TO SEE U BLOOMING WITH FLUENT ENGLISH…………..TC.AH

Full marks to your Professor on this line, specially about Shyness.

As far as i think, practise both writing and speaking does help, but if you ignore the people around you and dont care about what they say and speak the "Tootee Pooothee" English,i am sure you'll be a master one day!!!

Salaam Brothers,

I write this in reply to Mr. Mohiuddin's post, specifically. Dear Brother, I deeply understand that you are shooting those pitiless invectives at me. I am really sorry if you felt bad. But let me explain my point!

How do you really define a beginner? The one who is learning ABC. I am sure "No". A beginner can be the one who doesn't have a basic understanding of the language (By this I mean, he/she can't read and write things in the context, meant!).

But, please cast a glance at Miss Afshan's post. I guess she explained us her problem very well and understood our recommendations in their true meanings. So I won't call her a "beginner" at least. And even if I do, I think she has the basic understanding. So this is the reason I called that book a practical choice for Madam.

In case, i'm still wrong. Please pardon me!

Adil Memon

Hi,
In order to speak and write the English language correctly, it is imperative that the fundamental principles of the Grammar be mastered, for no matter how much we may read of the best authors, no matter how much we may associate with and imitate the best speakers, if we do not know the underlying principles of the correct formation of sentences and the relation of words to one another, we will be to a great extent like the parrot, that merely repeats what it hears without understanding the import of what is said. Of course the parrot, being a creature without reason, cannot comprehend; it can simply repeat what is said to it, and as it utters phrases and sentences of profanity with as much facility as those of virtue, so by like analogy, when we do not understand the grammar of the language, we may be making egregious blunders while thinking we are speaking with the utmost accuracy.

Assalam Alaikum,

My pesonal suggestion would be watch a lot of CNN & MSNBC and such, if you have access to them. Because listening can help speaking skills, and writing as well.

Thanks.
