Vocabulary Strategies
Quote:
This is a good decision considering the fact that you feel uncomfortable with a certain important compulsory subject. There are rumours that for CE 2016, screening test may also be carried out. In this particular scenario, it is essential to start the preparation of the English composition paper at an early stage. Therefore, if you feel yourself to be weak in vocabulary, commence the preventive measures as early as possible. For vocabulary enhancement, please stick to the following recommendations. 1: There are special books dealing with the high frequency words. The prominent ones being word smart 1 and 2. Each book contains almost 800 words. Not only the words are taken from SAT, GRE, GMAT books but they also tend to be cited regularly in articles of prominent newspapers (dawn). Hence, I would highly recommend you to buy these books. Word Smart 1 contains basic words that are used quite commonly. Word Smart 2 contains slightly difficult and unseen words. These books are not expansive and can buy them for around 150 each. I will also try to upload the pdf versions of the books to some external site and post the accompanying link here. 2: You can search the forum for some word lists. This is the link to one of the most important and useful word lists. http://www.cssforum.com.pk/css-compu...word-list.html Believe me, if you memorize this entire list, there is no need to consult any additional books. Most of the words in this thread are taken from word smart, GRE, GMAT and SAT books and all of them are frequently used. 3: You can also read DAWN on a daily basis and subsequently formulate a list of your own. This is also helpful as the list made by yourself tends to be remembered easily in comparison to the words that are memorized from a readymade source. Each day you should be aiming for at least 20-25 words. You can search for their root, meanings and etymology etc. Plus, do remember that memorized words tends to be forgotten easily. Hence, revise them on planned basis. Try to search for the roots of the words so that a better impression is implanted in your mental schema. Regards

There is this Magoosh vocabulary app (which I dont recommend but is very popular nonetheless) that you can use. I would suggest you to make an archive of "Vocabular Wednesday" from Magoosh blog and learn words from there. That will not only help you learn mere meanings but also the context, connotation, denotation etc. An alternative is vocabulary . com (provided you have a list of words and you jot down their meaning using this website).
Best of luck! |

Just read DAWN daily, especially the editorial and jot down difficult words. After 2 months you will be jotting down at max 1-2 words from the whole newspaper.
