Paradoxes of democracy

Democracy this word claims to be the solution of every problem of our people, this word is in a constant use specially by people who want to obtain power, “we need to defend democracy”, “we need to strengthen democracy”, “democracy is the best revenge” these are the sentences we listen on daily basis. But what is democracy is this really the remedy of all the problems faced by our nation? Is democracy really a magic which will solve all of our political, social and economic issues?
The answer to these question are buried inside the depth of democratic system. The reality is different, democracy is full of dilemmas, contradictions and paradoxes. The democracy is not universally appropriate and applicable in all countries regardless of history, culture and circumstances above all the democracy ignores the fundamental, cultural and historical differences between the developed countries and the developing countries. The level of the country economic development is a critical issue if we turn back the pages of history we see that not a single western country was a democracy at the time of its economic take off, the developing country frequently have to content with very different circumstances. People’s republic of china the world greatest economy the last thirty years world witnessed the most extra ordinary achievement, a country of 1.3 billion people twenty percent of the world population growing at ten percent a year, one-twentieth of the size USA economy in 1980 now over half the size of USA economy, 600 million people taken out of poverty the key which was used by the rulers of china was not democracy but the inimitable leadership unable china to flourish in this world. Chinese who supported the Communist Party or held anti-democratic perspectives had long expressed antipathy towards Western style democracy as incompatible with traditionalist Chinese culture. They hold that government is legitimate not when people influence it but when it represents their higher interests. So form the example of China it is clear that democracy can only grow when it is according a countries own history, culture and circumstances in this way democracy can come in many different form, shapes and sizes, developing countries like Pakistan can learn about democratic form of government form west but can never become like western countries because they have different cultures different histories.
Pakistan is now a democratic state but the prime need is economic stability. We are depended on the aid and investment of the developed countries to achieve a half way decent standard of living and gain full employment our “democratic government” have to bow to the dictates of the multi -national and international financial institutions whose priorities are profits and loan repayments not our well being . So our democracy is meaningless because it is a paradox of the most famous definition of democracy “of the people, by the people, for the people”. Here its seems it is for the financial institutes not for the people. Not only financial institutes our nation is manipulated in the name of democracy, the so called democratic government don’t have any concern about the condition of people there only concern is to stay in power by hook or by crook. Actually if we dig dipper the democratic form of government is a relative thing, Democracy demands from the common person a certain level of ability and character: rational conduct, an intelligent understanding of public affairs, independent judgement, tolerance and unselfish devotion to public interest. The citizens must be able to understand the interests of the community, to subordinate their own will to the general will and must feel their responsibility to the community. Democracy is for the people who know the power of vote who are aware about the parties’ manifesto, who don’t vote for cast but vote for the aims of the candidate but here voters are manipulated in the name of religion in the name of caste and the purpose of democracy is shattered. Democracy is based on certain theoretical values but human imperfection prevents them from flowering in practice.

Then come the biggest and most important flaw of democracy “democracy throws up mediocrities” which means that the intellectual and the great thinkers of a nation refrain from joining the system of democracy which may ends having authority but for them this system is a predicament, they have to a adopt a subservience position, for them it is similar to death because in this way their abilities are hindered and they can’t follow the path lead by other people, so their self-respect don’t allow them to join the business of democracy in this way the nation are left only with mediocre and at the end they can control the government but democracy can never give birth to a leader because a leader must be a visionary, knowledgeable , truthful, sincere and a hardworking person these qualities are of intellectual not a mediocre person. And only a leader can bring revolution. Pakistan where there is terrorism, unemployment, poverty, and corruption is in a need of a leader which can take our nation out of these miseries, but how can this form our government where intellectuals are confined in the houses and people with zero intelligence zero vision are our decision makers where before election the moto used by them is “all men are equal” but after election their action shows that “some are more equal”. These all are the weaknesses of democracy especially in our nation.
