[B]Smart Lockdown will not work:[/B]


If doctors are the messiahs and frontline warriors, then why the government is not heeding their prescription of curfew-style lockdown?

Taking risks is deeply embedded in human nature. People will take risks to work or move amidst the Covid-19 crisis. They will not be deterred by merely requests by authorities to stay home as propagated by the federal government. The decision makers at the centre are perceiving that hunger-caused-deaths may ensue in case a curfew-like lockdown is enforced. Indeed, we have never ever seen or heard any deaths caused due to hunger in Pakistan at least. Undoubtedly, the downtrodden segments have to undergo more troubles during the lockdown period than routine. In our part of the world, due to strong family/social system, poor persons are helped by their relatives and their acquaintances from time to time. For instance, philanthropists, social organisations and individuals have ramped up their social welfare activities by providing ration bags and cash handouts to those in need. Against that backdrop, perception that the strict lockdown may cause hunger and subsequent deaths is unfounded and betrays the common sense. Pakistan, like the United States, has wasted opportunity to contain the deadly Covid-19 when the very first case emerged in Karachi as no serious efforts were taken by the power-that-be. Undeniably, the government need to strike a balance between saving lives and livelihoods. Keeping in view the magnitude of impending crisis as gauged by doctors and recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the federal government in coordination with the provinces and regions must enforce the curfew-styled-lockdown to mitigate the damage to human lives. After all, saving lives should have precedence over everything else. If the we are considering doctors as the messiahs and the frontline warriors in our fight against Covid-19, then we must act on their advice in order to avoid repentance at a later stage.
