Post Had Had

The link shared by the member above has everything that you need to know about first 'have/had'. S/he has explained quintessentially; therefore, I am going to skip first 'have/had', which is actually a tense. What that link lacks is the second had. Therefore, let me explain that below.

For instance, you bought a 'gold' wristwatch on January 1, 2011; After few years, let us say in-between January 1, 2011 and May 26, 2015, you lost it. Let us suppose that you do not know the exact date when you have lost that wristwatch. Also, let us assume that today you met your old friend at airport, and you both had the following dialogue with each other:

Your friend:"Hey buddy!"
You:"Hellooo! It's been ages!"
Your friend:"Yeah! So where are you going?"
You:"Dubai! And you?"
Your friend:"London! Hey tell me what's the time right NOW?"
*he(you) checks*
You:" 2 O'clock!"
Your friend:"Hey buddy! Where is your gold wristwatch?"
You:"I have lost it." [You do not know the exact date in the past, and the action is also finished, which happened in-between January 1, 2011 and today. Therefore, you have used present perfect tense]
Your friend:"That's bad! Anyway, do you have our old group photo?"
You:"I have had that, but yesterday I gave it to Ali (another friend)!" [ Now here, the first have is the tense, whereas the second 'had' is used to show possession. Like I have an hourglass. In this case, have is not a tense; it means you possess that hourglass. You owns that hourglass. Have changes to had by considering the tense.]

Had had is mostly used in conditionals, but most of the times the second had is used to show possession. Obviously, few exceptions there like 'I have had a dinner,' which doesn't show possession. Also there is a difference between 'I have had dinner' and 'I have had a dinner.'[Although not related to your question]

That was another facet of 'had had.' Rest, follow that link. S/he explained it pretty well.

Regards.

Use of had had[/B][/B]

*
Had had is the past perfect form of have when it is used as a main verb to describe our experiences and actions. We use the past perfect when we are talking about the past and want to refer back to an earlier past time. In these examples, note the use of*before,*after,*already*and*by the time as a trigger for the past perfect. Note also that the contracted form of *had had* is*'d had.

*She'd had a lot to drink and wasn't capable of walking home by herself.

*After he'd had a good night's sleep, he felt much better.

*She sacked him before he had had a chance to explain his behaviour.

*By the time he was twenty he'd already had four different jobs.

*I'd already had a word with Joan about re-locating to Manchester and now she's had time to think about it, she quite likes the idea.
