The best way to improve one's vocabulary is by reading worthwhile books or well-written articles. That way, you not only come across usable words and phrases but you also get to learn how they're used and in what contexts. Simply memorizing words from a list would be of no advantage to you. I'd rather have my writing seen as plain instead of artificial.
