Wren n Martin is very comprehensive but it is a bit scary if one looks at it for the first time. I think you should better go for Oxford Practice Grammar by John Eastwood. It is very easy to understand, having almost all the things you need to know about practical grammar, as well as having exercises with every chapter to assess yourself. Answers of exercises are also given in the end. I am pretty sure it will solve your problem.

grammer is very important but i don't think that one needs to work so hard for it. Unlike many students in Pakistan, we (appearing in O'LeveLs with English A as a subject) did not need to study grammer. So practically all my life i have never learnt grammer.

One can improve his english writing skills if you are able to think clearly in English. Try to develop that. Try to develop the flow and the continuity. When i try to attempt anything related to grammer, i try to recall/use that sentence in my thoughts. if it sounds correct to me its okay, else i think about the alternatives. This can be developed if you watch english movies, listen to people having conversations in english and above all trying to develop the all times essential english knowledge and vocabulary through the reading habit.

P.S treat it as a personal opinion! People are more than free to differ!

I followed that and i needed one hour study for precise paper....for those direct/indirects etc etc...they are simple if you know the rules and all ...so people don't need to buy big books for them. instead try to indulge into some quality novels and short stories etc.

Although I do not hail from O level schooling system, yet it is applicable to me too.
