How to improve English Vocabulary
 

I wonder if i should go through a dictionary in order to cover up synonyms and antonyms portion of grammar and precise paper? Please suggest me how can i cope this portion. And if dictionary is needed to learn by heart, which one should i consult?

(1)download GRE vocab list from herehttp://www.ziddu.com/download/3162383/barronvocabulary.pdf.html,and commit every word to memory.
(2) Take online vocabulary tests(IELTS etc)

These are the same worlds as that of first list??

No,the second link contains fewer words(i.e.1500),While the first one(PDF File) carries around 3500 words.

Or i should say yes,in a sense that,the earlier contains all the words carried by the later.
(later is a proper subset of the earlier)

I prepared vocabulary from GRE books and idioms from Collins Idioms Dictionary +net +Exploring English. I practiced few essays, paragraphs and précis mainly from past papers because I didn’t have enough time. For précis I just consulted exploring English

In English composition paper, I attempted synonyms antonyms and active passive first then I moved on to comprehension. My last question was précis as it was quite time demanding.

The best way to improve your English is by reading books. There are no two ways about it.

Many books on grammar contain very archaic expressions that students end up using in completely irrelevant situations.

Read books and watch BBC documentaries on any topic that you're interested in - you can never go wrong with it.

I think it's futile to use GRE list. You won't be able to use crammed words properly and sooner or later you will forget them.

Reading is the only way to increase vocabulary. Most, if not all, of the aspirants here on CSS forum use words that don't quite fit the bill of context. That's the result of forcing oneself to remember words. Trust me an avid reader can spot secondrate vocabulary in a blink.

So unless you do your homework of reading, you can't really improve vocabulary.

You have to use different sources to enrich your vocabulary...

Prepare separate notes for the same- one in alphabetical order and other as general vocabulary (i e taken from newspapers, articles, blogs, books, etc).
Do not only note down words on paper but also use them in the sentences of your own, so the words get embedded in your mind once and for all.

Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary is the best of all as its explanation is very easy to understand with clear usage of words in every possible context. It provides the idioms and phrasal verbs ( if there are any ) of a particular word you are looking up. Here is the link to refer this dictionary online on internet:
