Difficult English
 

Dear Members,

I am going to start this thread in order to ask the difficult/complex sentences of English which I do not understand. Your cooperation in this regard will be highly appreciated and praised.

First of all, I would like to ask following sentences which confuse me:

1. Sentences starting with "Had"

I feel difficulty in understanding these sentences because some time "been" is used with "Had" and som time it is not used. Kindly guide me.

Example:

1. Had I done that earlier, I wouldn't have gotten in trouble!

2. Had there [B]been[/B] better communication, this may not have occurred!

In first sentence been is not used and in second sentence it is used. I have read several such kind of sentences in Dawn newspaper. I would like to know the correct structure to make above kinds of sentences.

Additionaly, In first sentence (would have not or would not have) ? which is correct and why ?

Moreover, you can also correct me if I have made any grammitical mistake in writing this thread.

according to my knowledge which is not perfect:):)
1st sentence is called conditional sentence as there is given a condition and its method of structure that there are 2 parts of sentence one has condition and 2nd part is reaction .so in condtional part had is used with 3rd form of verb and in in 2nd part would have is used.e.g
agr tm mahnat krty to pass ho jaty
if you had worked hard .you would have passed examination.
so here had is used but not been

here[COLOR="blue"] been [/COLOR]is as a main verb not as a auxiliary verb. been is third form of was .

i address the second one, we use [COLOR="Green"]been[/COLOR] when there is [COLOR="Green"]no Subject[/COLOR] present and don't use it otherwise...

Is it correct if I replace second sentence as follows:

Had there been better communication, this may not have occurred!

If there were better communication, It might not have occured.

The correct form of your sentence "If there were better communication, It might not have occured." is:

If there was a better communication, It might not have occured.

Yes it can be written like this but the sentences starting from HAD have their own importance as they give impression of your knowledge about the language and they are used more in the formal writings as well. So try to grasp its basic structure and use them in your writings. It will cast a good impression on the reader/paper checker.

Been is the third form of "Be".

The first clauses of both the sentences are correct as "had been" or "were" an be used alternatively; they express same meaning. But in second clause you should use "might" instead of "may", to refer to past event.

In second sentence"had"is used for interogation?.if it is so then why saying that using of "had" shows knowledge about language.I think its a common practice to use had in interrogative sentences.

Its not an interrogative sentence; its conditional.

There is by no means a connection between "BEEN and SUBJECT" I think Tooba has rightly pipointed how "BEEN" is used in such cases.
