Its 'a' year not an

Because, its pronunciation is 'yeer' thus there is no need for an.

"A year" is the correct form.
Always use "a" as the indefinite article before a consonant or any vowel with the sound of a consonant, such as "one" in "A one-year-old is still a baby". Sometimes a "y" is considered a vowel, but here it has the sound of a consonant.

it is "a year". Because we use an with only vowel sounding alphabets. In simple words those alphabets producing the voice of (alif or Alif Mad aa).

Raymond Murfy writes in his English Grammar book about "an year, an hotel etc" but most commonly a year is used. Therefore we cannot completely deny it.

Its about phonetics, while speaking people usually say 'an year' (because initial sounds like 'e', just like 'an hour' because initial sounds like 'o' (hour), similarly in "A one-year-old is still a baby" initial sounds like 'w' (as in won, one)) . Care about it when you are cautious of grammar (particularly in writing), because grammatically 'a year', 'a hour' or 'an one year old' would be correct.

Rule "an" is used before words beginning with a vowel "sound" since "hour" is pronounced with a silent h => its pronunciation is beginning with a vowel just like in "our" Therefore, an hour is correct a hour is wrong the pronunciation of "year" is not as same as that of "ear", the pronunciation of "year" begins with a consonant Therefore, a year is correct an year is wrong so next time you feel any confusion, just look for the pronunciation of the word If the pronunciation of a word begins with a vowel "sound", then it should have "an" before it otherwise a "a". Like 'a European' (initial sound is 'y' as in 'you'), 'a university' (again 'y' as in 'you'), 'an umbrella' (here initial sound is 'u' as in 'upper')
