What is the acceptable number that one can exceed from the required word count i.e. 120. If I write my answer +/- 20 words, would that be fine?

No, plus minus 5. If it is plus 20, you are writing either one concept twice or you are writing it in two many words. If it is minus zero, you are missing important concept or you are writing it in very few words. First check concepts. Then go for increasing or decreasing words.
