Its a Precis of CSS-1994

Education reflects the true image of society and social behavior. It contributes to the skills of younger generation that it embraces during different ages. Society’s edifice transformed in to a balanced condition through education.

Educational institutions would be reorganized in pivotal principles. Knowledge associated with various languages and subjects would carve out solutions to problems of contemporary life. Education will be structured to flourish intelligence.

As different nations have vision of education, it has come under profound stress. Political shoves and migration of people to different regions would either be absorbed or enrich the present culture. Social sciences as a result of cultural change may cause state schools to take initiative about the state system of education.

@ theelegant444; brother dont be disappointed. Most of the seniors of CSS 2009 would be busy in their preparations for next steps so there might be some late reply.

It will be appropriate if you could add original question so that it will be easy for members to examine your efforts.

Further, dont make paragraphs of your precis, your answer should be in a single paragraph.

ORIGNAL PARAGRAPH FOR PRECIS

“Education does not develop autonomously: it tends to be a mirror of society and is seldom at the cutting edge of social change. It is retrospective, even conservative, since it teaches the young what others have experienced and discovered-about the world. The future of education will be shaped not by educators, but by changes in demography, technology and the family. Its ends - to prepare students to live and work in their society - are likely to remain stable, but its means are likely to change dramatically”. “Schools, colleges and universities will be redefined in fundamental ways: who is educated, how they are educated, where they are educated - all are due for upheaval. B Ut their primary responsibility will be much the same as it is now: to teach knowledge of languages, science, history, government, economics, geography, mathematics and the arts, as well as the skills necessary to understand today’s problems and to use its technologies. In the decades ahead, there will be a solid consensus that, as Horace Mann, an American educator, wrote in 1846, “Intelligence is a primary ingredient in the wealth of nations”. In recognition of the power of this idea, education will be directed purposefully to develop intelligence as a vital national resource”. “Even as nations recognize the value of education in creating human capital, the institutions that provide education will come under increasing strain. State systems of education may not survive demographic and technological change. Political upheavals in unstable regions and the case of international travel will ensure a steady flow of immigrants, legal and illegal, from poor nations to rich ones. As tides of immigration sweep across the rich world, the receiving nations have a choice: they can assimilate the newcomers to the home culture, or they can expect a proliferation of cultures within their borders. Early this century, state systems assimilated newcomers and taught them how to fit in. Today social science frowns on assimilation, seeing it as a form of cultural coercion, so state systems of education are likely to eschew cultural imposition. In effect, the state schools may encourage trends that raise doubts about the purpose or necessity of a state system of education”. (Diane Ravieh).

PARAGRAPH

When you see a cockroach or a bed-hug your first reaction is one of disgust and that is immediately, followed by a desire to exterminate the offensive creature. Later, in the garden, you see a butterfly or a dragonfly, and you are filled with admiration at its beauty and grace. Man’s feelings towards insects are ambivalent. He realizes that some of them for example, - flies and cockroaches arc threats to health. Mosquitoes and tsetse flies have in the past sapped the vitality of entire tribes or nations. Other insects are destructive and cause enormous losses. Such arc locusts, which can wipe out whole areas of crops in minutes; and termites, whose often insidious ravages, unless checked at an early stage, can end in the destructing of entire rows –of houses. Yet men’s ways of living may undergo radical changes if certain species of insects were to become extinct. Bees, for example, pollinate the flowers of many plants which are food sources. In the past, honey was the only sweetening agent known to man in some remote parts of the world. Ants, although they bite and contaminate man’s food are useful scavengers which consume waste material that would otherwise pollute the environment. Entomologists who have studied insect fossils believe them to have inhabited the earth for nearly 400 million years. Insects live in large numbers almost everywhere in the world, from the hottest deserts and the deepest caves to the peaks of-high mountains and even the snows of the polar caps. Some insect communities are complex in organizations, prompting men to believe that they possess an ordered intelligence. But such organized behaviour is clearly not due to - developed brains. If we have to compare them to humans, bee and ant groups behave like extreme totalitarian societies. Each bee or ant seems to have a determined role to play instinctively and does so without deviation. The word “instinct” is often applied to insect behaviour. But some insect behaviour appears so clear that one tends to think that some sort of intelligenceis at work. For example, the worker bee, upon relating to the hive after having found a new source of nectar, communicates his discovery by a kind of dance which tells other bees the direction and distance away of the nectar.

PRECIS

Different insects have certain distinguished characteristics. Some are considered to be dangerous and killed at once. Some gather praise for their cuteness and decency. Some have tremendous tendency towards damage that might be crops or a great number of houses. Some are fed by waste products. Insects are found to be somewhat 400 million years old species and are present in different parts of the world. Most of these insects live in complex and well set groups. But such an orderly arrangement is not the result of progressive minds like humans. Moreover, each insect has an active role and participation. An acute mechanism is within insect behavior coupled with shrewdness. For instance, a bee on founding new food indicates other bees to remain away from it by dancing.

Title: Different kind of Insects with their significant characters (127/360)

omerkhan Wednesday, November 18, 2009 07:27 PM

Here goes my try for the insects one..

Different kinds of insects arouse different types of feelings in man, some positive, others negative. Insects, undoubtedly are a source of a number of threats and disturbances for humans, causing severe damage to life and property. However, they have their usefulness too. They are known to provide food for humans, play a part in natural processes, and cleaning the environment of wastes. Insects are believed to be present in every nook and corner of the world since ancient times. They often live in organized communities, complex in nature, which seems to be due to their intelligence. However, it is actually the instinct inherent in them which is responsible for such behavior, not the brain. But even the instinctive behavior has characteristics of intelligence. (122 words)

Some comments:

Precis is not just the shortening of the passage. It is about incorporating all the ideas in short.

Education an agent of social change in the society

1.In my view your title is not a very good one. For example paragraph says "Education does not develop autonomously: it tends to be a mirror of society and is seldom at the cutting edge of social change"
How you are going to make its title as Education an agent for social change. You are writting your title exactly opposite to what the passage says.

2. You said "It contributes to the skills of younger generation that it embraces during different ages." Where does passage say that? Passage is talking about the future of education, its means and ends. You completely ignored that.

3. Passage says "Today social science frowns on assimilation, seeing it as a form of cultural coercion, so state systems of education are likely to eschew cultural imposition. In effect, the state schools may encourage trends that raise doubts about the purpose or necessity of a state system of education". In simple words the above passage says that social sciences does not like assimilation therefore state schooling system will avoid education which result in assimilation, therefore state schooling system will not work for the purpose for which it is built. You said "Social sciences as a result of cultural change may cause state schools to take initiative about the state system of education." Does your sentence talk anything about the passage?

Different kinds of insects with their significant characteristics

1. Dear it is a good idea to divide the paragraph according to ideas or keywords contained in it, as it will make your precis more elaborate. For example passage goes " When you see a cockroach or a bed-hug your first reaction is one of disgust and that is immediately, followed by a desire to exterminate the offensive creature. Such arc locusts, which can wipe out whole areas of crops in minutes; and termites, whose often insidious ravages, unless checked at an early stage, can end in the destructing of entire rows –of houses."

Main focus lies on the men's feeling towards insects which is primarly the feeling of disgust or that of danger.

2. Passage goes "Yet men’s ways of living may undergo radical changes if certain species of insects were to become extinct. Bees, for example, pollinate the flowers of many plants which are food sources. In the past, honey was the only sweetening agent known to man in some remote parts of the world. Ants, although they bite and contaminate man’s food are useful scavengers which consume waste material that would otherwise pollute the environment."

Here the main focus is on insects benefits to humans.

For the above passage your precis says "Different insects have certain distinguished characteristics. Some are considered to be dangerous and killed at once. Some gather praise for their cuteness and decency. Some have tremendous tendency towards damage that might be crops or a great number of houses. Some are fed by waste products."

Why not to use active voice for men's feelings about insects?

3. Passage goes "Entomologists who have studied insect fossils believe them to have inhabited the earth for nearly 400 million years. Insects live in large numbers almost everywhere in the world, from the hottest deserts and the deepest caves to the peaks of-high mountains and even the snows of the polar caps." Main focus lies on their way of living.

4. Passage goes "Some insect communities are complex in organizations, prompting men to believe that they possess an ordered intelligence. For example, the worker bee, upon relating to the hive after having found a new source of nectar, communicates his discovery by a kind of dance which tells other bees the direction and distance away of the nectar."

Main focus lies on men's perception about the existence of intelligence or that of instinct in insects. It simply means that men's view about insects is divided on the issue of intelligence in different insects.

4. You said "For instance, a bee on founding new food indicates other bees to remain away from it by dancing." While passage goes "For example, the worker bee, upon relating to the hive after having found a new source of nectar, communicates his discovery by a kind of dance which tells other bees the direction and distance away of the nectar." Passage simply means that on finding new food source worker bee tells others by a special kind of dance. Does the passage said that bee tells others to remain away? It tells the direction and distance of the nectar. The words used " distance away of the nectar" not the " distance away from the nectar".

Sorry for such a strict assesment.

@omerkhan

A very nice try. You incorporated all in the precis what the passage says.

Tittle: Relationship of humans with insects

Man possesses diverse feelings of hatred and likeness regarding insects because of their varied characteristics. Yet extinction of certain insect species can bear deep impacts on the lifestyle of human beings because their usefulness in various ways. They can act as a food source as well as a useful scavenger for humans. Insects can be found anywhere on the earth. When compare to human beings, some of their communities possess intelligence not because of their developed brains but due to their instinct.

Precis-1996

Along with the new revelations of science and psychology there have also occurred distortions of what is being discovered. -Most of the scientists and psychologists have accepted Darwin’s theory of evolution and his observations on “survival of the fittest” as a final word. While enunciating his-postulate on the concept of the fittest, Darwin primarily projected physical force as the main criterion, and remained unmindful of the culture of mind, The psychologist, on the other hand, in his exclusive involvement with the psyche, has overlooked the potential of man’s physical-self and the world outside him. No synthesis has been attempted between the two with the obvious result of the one being sacrificed at the altar of the other. This has given birth to a civilisation which is wholly based on economic considerations, transforming man into a mere “economic being” and limiting, his pleasures and sorrows to sensuous cravings. With the force of his craft and guns, this man of the modern world gave birth to two cannibalistic philosophies, the cunning capitalism and the callous communism. They joined hands to block the evolution of man as a cultural entity, denuding him of the feelings of love, sympathy, and humanness. Technologically, man is immensely powerful; culturally, he is the creature ‘of stoneage, as lustful as ever, and equally ignorant of his destiny. The two world wars and the resultant attitudes display harrowing distortion of the purposes of life and power. In this agonizing situation the Scientist is harnessing forces of nature, placing them at the feet of his country’s leaders, to be used against people in other parts of the world. This state of his servility makes the functions of the scientist appear merely to push humanity to a state of perpetual fear, and lead man to the inevitable destruction as a species with his own inventions and achievements. This irrational situation raises many questions. They concern the role of a scientist, the function of religion, the conduct of politician who is directing the course 5f history, and the future role of man as a species. There is an obvious mutilation of the purpose of creation, and the relationship .between Cosmos, Life, and Man is hidden from eyes; they have not been viewed collectively.

PRECIS

The new disclosures of science, psychology and their numerous experts, had collectively accepted the Darwin’s theory of evolution as a last decision, who laid its foundation on material not on culture. The psyche experts have marked the fleshy character of man with its environment. No single combination has germinated till now. Civilization carved its roots on economic principles that include concepts of acute capitalism and cruel communism. Scientifically, man is dynamic but socially backward. In this coarse condition where science used nature as a force had ruined people around the globe. With this fact, humanity suffered negating success and development. It has undermined many queries in context of responsibility of a scientist, working of faith and behavior of representative. The future position of man relies on these pillars.

@theelegant444

Please try to read passage at least twice. First look should be a fast one to grip the main idea, while second one should be bit slower to understand details.

Some observations:

1. You said "The new disclosures of science, psychology and their numerous experts, had collectively accepted the Darwin’s theory of evolution as a last decision, who laid its foundation on material not on culture." While passage goes "Most of the scientists and psychologists have accepted Darwin’s theory of evolution ".

There is a way difference in both statements, because passage indicates difference of opinions and your precis says that there is no such difference by making all the scientists and psychologists to collectively accept the darwin's concept.

2. Passage says "The psychologist, on the other hand, in his exclusive involvement with the psyche, has overlooked the potential of man’s physical-self and the world outside him". You say "The psyche experts have marked the fleshy character of man with its environment".

You are saying exactly opposite to the passage. In simple words passage indicates that psychologists ignored the physical self of man, while you are saying that "psyche experts" have related the physical self of man with his environment. Please try to understand the differences of points of view of various parties described in the passage.
By the way I never heard anything like "psyche experts".

3. You said "Civilization carved its roots on economic principles that include concepts of acute capitalism and cruel communism. Scientifically, man is dynamic but socially backward." What is meant by "acute capitalism" in this context? Also you said "man is dynamic" while the passage says that "Technologically, man is immensely powerful". Does dynamic means powerful in this context? Please use simple words and if substitute word is not coming to your mind then just use the word used in the passage.

4. You said "The future position of man relies on these pillars." Where in the passage this is said? Dont be stereotyped, say what the passage describes, not your own thoughts.

My attempt for precis of 1996

Despite all the advancements in the field of science, man hasn’t been able to figure out the purpose of his life. Though Darwin’s theory is universally accepted, yet it only deals with physical interaction. No attempt has been made to create relationship between man’s physical-self and his environment. One of these factors is dominant over the other resulting in a society based on monetary gains. The dominant philosophies of capitalism and socialism have hampered the cultural and social development of man. Conflicts and consequent attitudes have changed the meaning of life and power. Scientists, because of their submissive nature towards the leaders, have led people into a state of fear of self-destruction. This whole scenario raises questions regarding the role of scientists, leader, religion and man in a society. There is an absence of purpose of man’s creation because the universe, life and man have not been seen as a collective system.
