To read all the rules and principles is necessary but practice is the most important of all. One cannot master anything unless he practices.

Thumbs up

oh God...this detailed discussion on precis writing is although effective ...but is enough to confuse for a new person who has not much time left in examination...so my msg for those who are new at this forum and finding solution to ready their precis writing section.....guys first of all be relax and confident as english is not our mother tongue...so, one has to be confident only calm,.

attempting this section one only needs to follow points given below..

1. read this passage calmly (without any pressure over our head that u are sitting in examination hall and make hurry) , read the paragraph like u are sitting in ur drawing room and reading a story..... read passage for 5 times (if get idea in 2nd reading although, but do complete five readings).

2.count words and divide by 3. u ll get the total word limit to express the idea of passage. avoid all examples and details like beating about the bush.

3.make a rough draft in foam of points within ur word limits. use idioms and one word substituions(if comes in ur mind relevant to the idea), if not so write in ur own words with a focus on conciseness.

4. dont use words like i , we but one/people/it is generally accepted/according to this etc..

5.dont use exacts word of passage but only key words..u can change sequence but ideally i should be match the original text.

best of luck to all.

Dear don't worry about it.....there is already a lot of information about it, you just follow the steps.....
  1. Give the passage a casual reading to have a general idea of the passage...
  2. Now read it thoroughly with focused attention and meticulously to every detail.
  3. There is only one main idea and the rest is description and corollaries of the main idea, you have to distinguish between the corollary and the main idea...Most of the people get confused and lured by the decoy of these corollaries and get the irrelevant idea...remember the main idea is one and only...
  4. Give another reading to the passage and now start skimming, taking out the genuine ideas and leaving the rest which is the explanation of the genuine ideas.
  5. Now once you have found out the main idea, give it a comprehensive name, this is your title.
  6. Make a draft and make sure you have included everything relevant.
  7. It must be the 1/3rd of the actual passage.
  8. The precis must support the title because if you are not able to find the actual thing then still you have safe zone if you at least write staying within the boundaries of the title given.

Ambreen's points are also worth following.
Here are some useful tips to understand the precis and for attempting it.
1-Precis should never be less than one third of the passage and never more than that with exception to 5,6 words maximum.
2-Give ample time in comprehending the precis.
3-Never go for a final precis in first attempt. Make a raw draft or precis.
4-Never add any extra thing into the real concept i.e; example, observation, experience etc.
5-To start with the precis first step should be to make key points of the passage. Take 3,4 lines which are containing the same sense and make one sentence out of them. By this you will find 4 to 5 statements or sentences in total. Now arrange them and make a precis.
6-Try to use one word substitutions for bigger and larger sentences, and avoid using the words of passage in your precis, except when you are not able to remember any substitute for that particular word. (It should be the last resort) As you cannot leave it in the exam.
7-Always do it at the end.
8-your rough draft and working should be on the neat paper. It would leave a good expression upon the checker that you did put your utmost efforts in making a precis.
9-Give only one title to the precis. Opening or ending of the paragraph most of the time contains the theme of the precis, and seldom you have to get the hidden theme by reading and comprehending the whole paragraph.
10-Precis should be in single paragraph.
11-Mention the number of words at the end of your precis or make a note that "Original passage contains that much words and precis contains that much".

Best of luck
Regards

Thumbs up My Point of View being Masters in English

[QUOTE][B]
I believe that we are the habitual of spoon feeding and try to follow the very same rules and regulations as written in different books rather using our own sense and discovering our own way in any regard.

It is however necessary that we should have certain type of Basic knowledge but it doesn't mean that we wholly-Solly do as it is known or taught to us.
Allah Almighty has injected different abilities in different human beings which we call as natural talent and abilities and that's why we are called as rational (having reason and logic) creature.

Coming to the point, Precis Writing do require certain type of techniques or primary requirements but it does never ever mean that one should follow complete code of conduct rather minor variations are acceptable in this regard if one coveys the message of actual paragraph in one's own wording by precising it as the one/third form of the genuine passage. On the other hand it is again never ever 100% rule that one has to precise the actual passage in exact one/third form. A slight variation of plus-minus is acceptable.

[FONT="Verdana"]In last, it depends purely upon the examiner that whether he/she agrees with your efforts or not. If one has successfully conveyed the requirement even in one's own style, will be awarded. Do not be a blind follower of any thing rather develop an analytical approach and try to do some thing different than others but in extra-ordinary way.
