Evaluate this precis-2000
1. MAKE A PRÉCIS OF THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE IN ABOUT ONE THIRD OF ITS LENGTH. Suggest a suitable title also. (20)
Besant describing the middle class of the 9th century wrote " In the first place it was for more a class apart. "In no sense did it belong to society. Men in professions of any kind (except in the Army and Navy) could only belong to society by right of birth and family connections; men in trade—bankers were still accounted tradesmen—could not possibly belong to society. That is to say, if they went to live in the country they were not called upon by the county families and in the town they were not admitted by the men into their clubs, or by ladies into their houses… The middle class knew its own place, respected itself, made its own society for itself, and cheerfully accorded to rank the deference due." Since then, however, the life of the middle classes had undergone great changes as their numbers had swelled and their influence had increased. Their already well –developed consciousness of their own importance had deepened. More critical than they had been in the past of certain aspects of aristocratic life, they wee also more concerned with the plight of the poor and the importance of their own values of society, thrift, hand work, piety and respectability thrift, hand work, piety and respectability as examples of ideal behavior for the guidance of the lower orders. Above all they were respectable. There were divergences of opinion as to what exactly was respectable and what was not. There were, nevertheless, certain conventions, which were universally recognized: wild and drunker behaviors were certainly not respectable, nor were godlessness or avert promiscuity, not an ill-ordered home life, unconventional manners, self-indulgence or flamboyant clothes and personal adornments. Title: The Dilemma of Middle class Solution: Besant has explained the middle class of 9th century as least acceptable group in the society. Irrespective of their profession they did not seem to be belonging to the society or welcomed anywhere except through their family connections. But middle class has grown itself as a respectable group of the society over the years and had undergone great changes. As their self-awareness culminated, they seemed to be more concerned with the misery of the poor and knew the value of their respectability, hard work, and piety that could act as example for the lower classes. But yet again difference of opinions was present as ever, that what was respectable and what was not because in any case wild, drunken, ill-ordered life style and self gratification were still considered disrespectful. I think I have remained unable to comprehend the passage in a good manner. Please help. |

Good attempt, but avoid explanations and long sentences. As your start should be:
"The middle class of 19th century didn't belong to society according to Basant." Instead of: "Besant has explained the middle class of 9th century as least acceptable group in the society." Remember: Start of your precis should reflect whole conclusion of it. Make a draft again and avoid illustrations as you have given in: " As their self-awareness culminated, they seemed to be more concerned with the misery of the poor and knew the value of their respectability, hard work, and piety that could act as example for the lower classes." And here as well. "what was not because in any case wild, drunken, ill-ordered life style and self gratification were still considered disrespectful. " Give only author's opinion.

Middle Class- The class in the Middle
And what about this one ?
And the title Middle class in 9th century, according to Besant, was a separate society in itself as it was not welcome in the clubs of the elite, who inherited their rights. But as of now the middle class has a sense of self importance, they relate to the problems of the poor and have a more distinct set of morals and values. Though those values have always been controversial but some are agreed upon. |

Please senior check my precis...
Till 9th century, middle class was not considered the part of society. irrespective of their profession, they were not welcomed anywhere except their families. Since then, time has changed their status as they grew in numbers and influence. Their concerns about aristocratic life become more critical and helpful towards the plight of poor. Their piety, generosity and respectability demonstrate a model for lower class. But differences in opinions still exist due to some universally recognized conventions like wildness, drunken and ill-ordered life style are still considered disrespectful.
