Q.2. Make a précis of the given passage and suggest a suitable heading. (20+5) 2009

From Plato to Tolstoi art has been accused of exciting our emotions and thus of disturbing the order and harmony of our moral life.” Poetical imagination, according to Plato, waters our experience of lust and anger, of desire and pain, and makes them grow when they ought to starve with drought. “Tolstoi sees in art a source of infection. “Not only in infection,” he says, “a sign of art , but the degree of infectiousness is also the sole measure of excellence in art.” But the flaw in this theory is obvious. Tolstoi suppresses a fundamental moment of art, the moment of form. The aesthetic experience – the experience of contemplation- is a different state of mind from the coolness of our theoretical and the sobriety of our moral judgment. It is filled with the liveliest energies of passion, but passion itself is here transformed both in its nature and in its meaning. Wordsworth defines poetry as “ emotion recollected in tranquility’. But the tranquility we feel in great poetry is not that of recollection. The emotions aroused by the poet do not belong to a remote past. They are “ here”- alive and immediate. We are aware of their full strength, but this strength tends in a new direction. It is rather seen than immediately felt. Our passions are no longer dark and impenetrable powers; they become, as it were, transparent. Shakespeare never gives us an aesthetic theory. He does not speculate about the nature of art. Yet in the only passage in which he speaks of the character and functions of dramatic art the whole stress is laid upon this point. “ The purpose of playing,” as Hamlet explains, “ both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as, twere, the mirror up to nature; to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time, his form and pressure.” But the image of the passion is not the passion itself. The poet who represents a passion doest not infected us with this passion. At a Shakespeare play we are not infected with the ambition of Macbeth, with the cruelty of Richard III or with the jealously of Othello. We are not at the mercy of these emotions; we look through them; we seem to penetrate into their very nature and essence. In this respect Shakespeare’s theory of dramatic art, if he had such a theory, is in complete agreement with the conception of the fine arts of the great painters and sculptors.

Both Plato and Tolstoy considered art leading towards immorality.According to Plato ,it excites evils in mind which should be diminished .Tolstoy consider art an infection whereby degree of infectiousness defines excellency in the piece of art. There are flaws in this Theory of art ; it denies imaginative skills which develop calibers for moral judgment as well as catharsis. Wordsworth says poetry is an immediate experience of meditation .These thoughtful observation are converted from visualization to actualization.Shakespeare instead of theorizing or defining it stressed on characters and thematic connotation of life .In his plays, one does not move towards vices because these are representation of characteristics of nature and Age .Portraying these facts do not lead towards imitation of their bad deeds but arouse pity and fear.Shakespeare pioneered the theory of dramatic art by portraying the mirror of life.

EXTENSIVE READING DEVELOPS CRITICAL JUDGMENT

Any literary piece of writing has a bearing upon readers' mind as well as shapes their attitude. The degree of influence relates to the strength of author's personality reflecting through the written material and the weakness of the reader's attributes. A young reader or an old reader without sufficient reading background is more likely to be inspired by the charm of one or more than one writers. Gradually, as one's span of reading increases then he or she starts evaluating one author from another and this ability of assessment develops critical thinking, which protects one from the supremacy of any particular form of writer. Value of excessive reading is not accrual of knowledge but it is the critical judgment that sprouts from it. Hence, at a single time, multitude of opinions of different authors resides in an intellect but the reader assorts them according to his or her taste. (149 word Precis)

Précis 2007

Extensive study vs personality development

CONCIOUSLY OR UNCONCIOUSLY MAN IS AFFECTED BY THE WORK OF IMAGINATION. WHATEVER we read, imparts profound effect on our life. A candid look into one's past would reveal he would have been remained enthrall to more than one poet in his different stages of life. It happens due to lack of literally acumen. To fill this gap, stronger personality of poet is the most appropriate. Successive succession of different people in human mind starts to compare one’s trait over other. This critical evolution refrains our mind to be occupied by any more personalities. Extensive study develops well updated stock of knowledge in our mind, which prevent us to be dominated by any other, rather than giving them their due place

I was advised by my Professor of English that you must write a rough draft for the given passage and at the end of this draft, one should write 3 to 5 suggested titles.
The next step which would be writing 2nd draft or a final draft should include one of those suggested titles at the top. I just followed this procedure and Alhamdulillah I got through the exams this year.
Another thing that I would like to suggest all of you that try to write down the total number of words of your precise against the total words of the pessage. It does not give any extra marks but adds to the overall impression of your paper as you facilitate the examiner by using such tactics

Various theories on the influence of art on human emotions
Art has always been accused of stirring emotions and disturbing order. According to Plato poetical imagination nourishes passions which ought to be suppressed. Tolstoi perceives art as a source of infection and attributes its excellence to its ability to infect others, but refutes the moment of form in art.An aesthetic experience fills mind with passion as opposed to the sobriety required to make moral judgments. Although Wordsworth regards poetry as reminisces in tranquility, the feelings it invokes are tangible and alive rather than remote. To Shakespeare the function of art is to emulate human nature and present the image of its passion. The poet does not infect us with the passion but strips them bare. Shakespeare’s thoughts are in consonance with that of the great artists.

1. Precise writing

My advise to First start with the rules given in EWE.

Sketch of rules that I followed:
Counting words of the origional para given in paper
Deviding them by 3 and try to stick to the limit with a +- 5%.
Reading the para and finding its main idea (to locate the heading)
Finding key sentences and key words and then converting them into own words and sentences
Arranging them in for of a para.
NOTE: Exclude examples, adjectives, repetitions, facts and figures.

How to practice and get it prepared.

1. First start with the solved example of EWE. Read the para and then read solution given, think on the solution and para and try to grasp how they are attempted.

2. Then read the para one by one and try to solve it urself by the following method

1. try to collect important lines, words that u think should be the part of the solution. write them on the page. Give it three reading and each time try to collect the lines and words separately.

2. Now as u have read the para thrice write the basic theme of the para
in a line or two.

3. Now u have the rough work prepared, from that collect the most important lines and words which u think should be discussed in the solution.

4. Replace these lines in your own words and try to use other words with the same meanings without changing the meaning of the lines.

NOw write the solution, compare it with the given solution in EWE. Once you are gone through the solved examples, solve the unsolved and soon you will find a grip on the precise writing. Once you are gone through these paras then try to solve the paras of the previous papers. This needs a lot of practice

Unlike the intro part and the historical background, one must hit the bull's eye and start addressing the topic. Anthropological transition of society would give a literary flair and one must keep this flair alive throughout the essay, Never start an Essay from a Quote and try to be well straight from the beginning and avoid high frequency words subject to have become a phenomenon of an oldies these days.

But what i see , people have done and qualified the Essay is altogether different from what i have been being taught and what my writing style has become these days. If i second my brainwashed opinion then the work of the qualified aspirants don't attract me but again the fear of failing this subject in mirage of the passed aspirants kills me

I think so he is right .Don`t confused yourself with vocabulary or others.each one has its own caliber vary person to person .CSPs does not mean all are mentors for English .Many cspz managed to pass it with difficulty . I think ,there are other thought conflicting in your mind . what you have been asked or guided more because your first line shows your teacher`s expertise and skills .
