Islam is the religion of peace and harmony. The word Islam comes from Arabic word ‘Salam’ which means peace. Thus Islam means peace. Islam is not confined to peace just in its meaning, but it also promotes peace through its beliefs and teachings. Islam emerged on the horizon of Arabian Peninsula, when Arabs were mired in the quagmire of ignorance and lawlessness. They would resort to wars on trivial matters; they had no importance for peace. In this backdrop, Islam came up with the concept of peace; it acknowledged the significance of peace in the lives of human beings. Thus Peace became the essential message of Islam enshrined in Islamic teachings and endorsed by the conduct of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The World has been under the dark clouds of war since time immemorial. The sole purpose behind these wars was material and temporal gain. People were awakened to the reality after they had witnessed two great wars which had almost staked the very existence of human beings. Ultimately, they realized the significance of peace. The whole world decided unanimously to solve their matters through peaceful means and constructive dialogue not through war or coercive means. Finally, United Nations came into being for the attainment of the lofty ideal of peaceful world – which Islam had aspired fourteen centuries ago. But still, the world has failed to achieve the goal of peaceful and harmonious world.
In these grim circumstances, Quran seems to be a beacon of light for humans. The message of Quran is that of peace. Quran enjoins Muslims: to remain peaceful; to live in concord with other fellow beings; and to respect and save the lives of other humans. Quran declares: “He, who kills one man, is the killer of whole humanity whereas he, who saves the life of his fellow beings, is the saviour of humanity.” These words of Quran vividly exhibit the importance it attaches to the peaceful growth of society where every individual is bound to respect and take care of others. A society, where nobody is allowed to transgress limits, will certainly be a peaceful society.
The practical example of the peaceful society, which Islam hankers for, comes from the city state of Medina established by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself. The Muslims under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) were the paragons of Islamic ideals of peace and harmony. They laid the foundations of a state where peace was to reign supreme. And to achieve this objective, they sought areas of common interest with non-Muslims and made alliances. This was the watershed moment in the history of world. This was the first city state ever established where peace was ensured through acknowledging the rights of other religious minorities.
Islam orders its followers to come on common terms not only with fellow beings but also with the ruler of territory they are living in. Even if ruler is non-Muslim, Muslims have to follow him until they are allowed to profess their religion and act upon Islamic principles. If the ruler denies Muslims the liberty to follow Islamic ideals, Muslims are advised to migrate to other regions where they get the freedom to act upon Islamic teachings. They are not to wage a war against the ruler except in extreme conditions. In the situation, when their religion is in danger – and they do not find any other course to act upon – they are allowed to declare Jihad against the ruler. Thus Jihad is the ultimate mean deployed by Islam when all peaceful means are exhausted.
Islamic concept of peace is not restricted only to the absence of war. Rather, it encompasses the peace of mind and heart too. In the contemporary world of scientific achievements, man has accomplished comforts for his body but he has failed to acquire the peace of mind and heart. In this scenario, Islamic principles are the only source to regain the lost peace of mind and heart.
Islam has propagated the message of peace in the world. And, it has the capability to ensure a peaceful society, if its teachings and beliefs are acted upon.
Praying five times a day in congregation is the bounden duty of every Muslim. And within this prayer is hidden the peaceful message of Islam. Rather, prayer is the manifestation of peace and harmony in itself. By offering prayer five times a day in congregation, Muslims come into contact with each other. They learn to cooperate with each other. In this context, there is no room for any kind of dissension among the people of the community. In case, there arises any hostility that can be resolved peacefully; because by regular interaction, they build trust and confidence in each other required for the success of peaceful means of resolving a conflict.
Believing in the life hereafter is one of the basic beliefs of Islam. Through this belief, Islam ensures peace in society. It is clearly portrayed in Islamic teachings that whatever humans sow in this world will reap in the hereafter. If he passes his life in virtuous manner helping his fellow beings, he will be rewarded an eternal abode in paradise in the life hereafter. And if he lives a life treading on the path of devil, he will be subjected to punishment. This dual promise of reward or punishment paves the way for peaceful society as nobody will try to inflict pain on others.
Peace permeates a just and equal society. Islam has taken concrete steps to bring equality and justice in society. It is human nature to react furiously when he is denied an equal status in the society or is subjected to tyranny and injustice. And if inequality and injustice are removed from society, the lacuna for discord and war will be filled leading a society on the road to peace and prosperity.
All the basic teachings of Islam uphold that it is the religion of peace. It disseminates the message of peace with a plan of action and strategy to ensure it.
The current violence and extremism worldwide is attributed to Islam. Islam is held responsible for the acts of a few individuals who do not have even basic knowledge of Islamic teachings and principles. They are misinterpreting Islam for their own benefits. By spreading terrorism and extremism, they are doing Islam a great disservice. Theirs is the distorted version of Islam. They do not know that peace is the essential message of Islam. They are perpetrating these acts in wanton defiance of every law of God and man. Therefore the world must acknowledge the fact that Islam has nothing to do with these extremists and terrorists.
Thus Islamic message is message of peace. Islamic teachings and practices vindicates this claim. And the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the practical example before us. The solution to the modern world problems of war, terrorism and extremism lies in the message of Islam. If humans want to establish a peaceful world, they must act upon Islamic teachings and endorse Islamic law. When this is done, the day – when the dream of peaceful world will be realized – is not far away.

It needs further elaboration of peace under the leadership of prophet Muhammad. The word PEACE is almost writtten in every para of the esaay, it seems as you are coerced to use a word PEACE in hundred sentences. Mention some events of prophet which have peaceful endings.
