Among the limitless creatures of Almighty Allah one is human being- man and woman. These two form the very basis of a society and are equally responsible for its welfare or wretchedness. Or, keeping in consideration the role a woman can perform in a society as mother, wife, sister or teacher, it would not be an exaggeration to say that women are to some extent more responsible in this regard. Perhaps it was the superior role of woman she played for the morality, welfare, and progress of nations that urged Brigham Young to write “You educate a man; you educate a man, you educate a woman; you educate a generation. Unfortunately, even after being cognizant of the crucial role women can play in the progress of nation, very few are the nations which granted women with their due place in society, while other simply ignored them. They are tortured, deprived of education and economic rights, malnourished, and imposed with decisions thus giving an impression of not being considered a human being even. While the causes behind such ill-treatment toward women in many countries including Pakistan range from religious and social to political and economic.
Keeping the women backward and thinking about the progress of nation is a folly next to none. In the countries like Pakistan, where women are taken as inferior creature and are deliberately kept backward, progress in any field is a far cry. There is need of the day that the talks let be walked now, practical measures should be taken, policies be reviewed and then implemented regarding empowering women in each and every walk of life.
Following are the faces of women backwardness in any nation.
Women literacy rate is deplorably low. They are not given right to education. Example of our own country can be best quoted here. According to a report by UNESCO, female literacy rate is 45.3% as compared to that of male which is 71.5% of total literacy rate which is 58% in the country.
On economic front too women are deprived of their rights even in educated circles of societies. Very few people take it as their religious and moral duty to endow their women with their due share in inheritance. Gender gap is self-evident if viewed in terms of employment and wages in Pakistan; female labour force participation is 22% while that of man is 67.8%. Similarly, women are paid 23% less than men for the same work. This is how both on domestic and national level economic rights of women are ignored rather snatched.
Malnutrition is another face of women backwardness. From childhood to the old age women seem compromising on their right of good or at least equal diet. Male child is usually given preference in this regard because he has to run the family setup in future, an absurd excuse behind the misogynistic approach. Likewise little care is brought about the diet of mother, during pregnancies and after leading to deteriorated health and vulnerability to serious diseases.
Instead of giving right of decision making, women are only imposed with decision. Thus on intellectual basis too they are thought inferior to men. They are bound to surrender to the verdicts of their male thus dominant family members, even if those verdicts are against their will.
Women are subjected to violence at domestic level and sexual harassment at work places, educational and public places. The story does not end here, their grievances are many more. They are seemed being victim to child marriage tradition while excessive pregnancies, when they themselves have just crossed the threshold of childhood are detrimental to their health and even lives in severe cases.
Backwardness of women has proved to be an impediment in the progress of nations. The nations, which are morally weak, economically depressed, and politically declined, have found the backwardness of women as a responsible factor behind their dismal state of affairs.
Backwardness of women gives rise to the following hazardous consequences which are the trademarks of a backward nation.
The society careless about the education, health, necessities of life, social and economic rights of a woman is the bad example of law and order situation, ethical values, and ability to grow. A mother lap is called the first place to learn, an uneducated and deprived mother would not be able to bring her children up on the parameters of decency and morality. As the children spend more time with their mother, only if she is herself educated, socially and economically satisfied, she would be able to teach her child about ethics, religion and the importance of respect for rule and law. This is the very reason that countries where female literacy rate is abysmally low, witness high crime rate, more corruption and moral corruption, nepotism and favoritism, incompetence and drug addiction among youth. It is hard to turn back on the fact that countries with female literacy rate high enjoy a robust social setup.
On economic front too backwardness of women leads to economic depression while their empowerment paves way to economic stability.
According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, US could add 2.1 trillion to the nation’s GDP in less than two decade if states made serious efforts in raising the rate of women workforce participation and spreading them into more productive job sectors. Likewise if the women are not empowered and kept backward on economic front, they would not be able to contribute to national GDP.
In the industries such as garments, apparel, food, beverages, women have proved themselves more competitive as compared to the male worker and thus earned a higher place for their products in global markets. In this perspective too, ignoring the eligibility of woman means to give a severe blow to exports of the country.
Women’s participation in workforce, setting their own businesses, and involving in other categories of works for earning lead to an increase in tax revenues of the state while their absence becomes a factor in its decrease.
Women’s participation in paid work brings prosperity for her family in particular and for the country in general. When both of the family members are earning they can easily meet the needs of life which is quite difficult for only one earning hand. While chaining women to unpaid works only, such as cooking, caring children and other activities at home, will bring no economic benefits rather will add to poverty.
Adversely affected health conditions of nations are directly or indirectly related to illiteracy and unawareness of women about self-hygiene and proper nourishment. An educated mother is well aware of what the importance of cleanliness is for her child and which kind of food is the need of her child. Moreover, she is also cautious about her own health and food. She does not discriminate between girl and boy child regarding food and health thus saves her girl-child from falling prey to diseases because of insufficient food. Keeping in view the above mentioned facts it would not be wrong to say that depriving women of education and health means welcoming the diseases and unhealthy future for upcoming generations.
Uneducated women know not the importance of family planning and smaller families. They go through excessive pregnancies compromising their health as well as contributing to overpopulation.
Backwardness of women itself is a black spot for nations. Such nations with more number of illiterate, economically deprived, sexually harassed, physically tortured and unsecure women are deemed as uncivilized and barbarous.
Following are the reasons for backwardness of women in any nation.
Among the religious causes negative role of the so-called religious scholars is the most prevalent. Religious leaders in every religion have been the prominent figures in every era. Their quest for materialistic gains and increased influence sometime deviate them from their actual duty and make them present the religious injunctions with all together opposite meanings. Religion Islam for instance is the custodian of women rights but the same religion has to face the criticism of west when comes the matter of women rights and one of the reasons behind this criticism is negative role of so-called religious scholars.
Misinterpretation of religious injunctions regarding women is also a cause of female deprivation. Having little religious awareness leads to misunderstanding of matters concerning women thus depriving them of their rights.
Absence of Ijtehad which is the need of the day and one of the sources of Sharia is another major cause of under discussion issue. Muslim Ummah is expected to make Ijtehad in the light of Quran and Hadith according to the requirements of era. While its absence among Muslim states giving rise to a number of problems for women.
Poor legislation and lack of political will are the political causes of the issue. Government’s Poor legislation and flawed policies render no empowerment to women. For instance in many developing countries like Pakistan there is no policy to make different institution like parliament, judiciary, army, and media etc. bound to have equal or at least considerable number of women as compared to men. Also, having policies only is not sufficient; these are fruitful only when implemented. This poor legislation coupled with lack of political will to get the policies implemented furthers the backwardness of women.
Like religious, economic and political causes there are also social causes leading to women backwardness. Illiteracy of men is the first and foremost social cause which makes men think that education has nothing to do with the women as they are to live at home. Illiterate men know very little about the role women can perform in the progress of nation if educated and empowered, also they are oblivious of the harms society has to bear in opposite case.
Taboos, customs, and traditions have also proved to be a stalemate in materializing the dream of gender equality. Child marriage, vani, watta satta, karokari , honor killing, etc. are those taboos and tradition which have made this world a Hell for the women where living a contented life is an unseen dream.
In security perspective too women themselves or their male family members have to limit their freedom. Outside the home they are shown the cruel face of society in the form of acid throwing and sexual harassment etc. Such insecurities confine them to the homes limiting their social activities.
Among the economic causes, poverty at domestic level and budgetary constraints at national level are the most perilous as for as the matter of empowering women is concerned. When there is poverty at domestic level spending money on a female child’s food and education as compared to that of male child is usually not considered necessary. Sometime the poor parents cannot meet the expenses of college and higher education and the girls have to say good bye to education after completing their primary, middle education or matriculation. Poverty at domestic level is prime cause which allow only 59.3% girls to complete their primary education. Similarly on national level too insufficient budget for female education, vocational and other training centers worsen the situation.
Women, more or less, are suffering everywhere in the world. However it is satisfactory that steps are being taken on national and international level to redress their issues. A few steps are as follows:
On international level in 2000, 189 countries signed UN declaration of human rights called Millennium Development Goals, 3rd goal of which addressed the gender equality and women empowerment. These Millennium Development Goals expired at the end of 2015, however there have been seen a significant progress in gender equality in education, workforce, and political representation in 2015 as compared to 2000.
After Millennium Development goals, Sustainable Development Goals also incorporate the target of achieving gender equality in every field of life. It is being hoped that situation will improve further.
Different laws and policies are being formed to empower and secure the position of women in society such as Women Protection Bill in Pakistan.
Media is also doing commendable job in this regard by telecasting awareness programs, making women aware of their rights and duties towards society and nation.
There are also a number of NGOs on national and international level to secure the rights of women and help achieve them their due place in the society.
Following are some pragmatic suggestions to secure, educate and empower women.
Firstly, governments should ensure enactment and strict implementation of laws to end domestic violence, provide security at work places, and control early childhood marriages.
Secondly, governments should fix and enhance quotas for women in elected bodies and national as well as provincial assemblies, educational institutions, jobs in public as well as private sectors.
Thirdly, there should be counseling of the male members of society.
Fourthly, awareness campaigns and seminars should be conducted to make women aware of their rights.
Fifthly, national budgets should be increased for women education, population control programs, soft loans for women, and women’s health and nutrition.
In nutshell it would not be wrong to say that women which make 49.6% of total population of world, if left with their issues unaddressed would become a serious threat to the welfare, progress, , and even the survival of nations. On the other hand educating and empowering women coupled with gender equality in every sphere of life ensure progress of women leading to social welfare, economic stability, and political acme. Thus, there is need of the day that all the issues regarding women whether social, economic, or religious must be resolved to achieve short and long term benefits on national and international level.

"between girl and boy child"
this is incorrect. you didn't need to use the word child at the end.
