A short essay on Disaster management in Pakistan

Disaster means any sudden catastrophe which leads to huge destruction in the shape of human loss, infrastructural loss, and many more. Disaster can be divided into two forms: natural and man-made. Either its natural or man-made, the destruction is unpredictable. No country claims that it has developed a full fledge management process to counter disaster. The developed countries are diligently working on the management of disasters so that whenever any disaster happens they can mitigate the suffering of the public.
Unfortunately, in Pakistan, government is failed to realize the importance of disaster management. Pakistan is prone to disaster owing to its geographical location, every year we face any disaster in the shape of floods, earth quake, or something else. But these disasters are not enough for the government. Intermittent governments and the power struggles between the leaders have fragile the whole administrative system of Pakistan.
Disaster is not a new phenomenon, in the past centuries; people faced many disasters which exterminated the whole races of the particular area. For example, famine and plague in the Europe has exterminated millions of people in a few days. Pakistan had also faced a huge earthquake in the Quetta in early 50’s, which annihilated hundreds of people. The earthquake of 2005, has great impact in the history of Pakistan, still, the effected people are living on the side of roads. Government machinery is failed to address the problems of the people of Balakot and other affected areas. Moreover, the flood of 2010, had ruined the economy of Pakistan, but still there is no much progress has seen from government.
Although government has established its department named as Disaster Management but it’s fragile and ineffective. Owing to less budgeting and incompetent leadership, the department has failed to produce effective management for the betterment of the people. There is a dire need to reinvigorate the department and its policies. No one can forecast any natural disaster but preparedness to the disaster is prerequisite.
Lack of preparedness, budgeting, outdated equipment, medical facilities, and many more things inflict a great human loss whenever a disaster happens. Whenever a disaster comes, Human toll exceeds due to incompetency of the department concerned.
Aftermaths of any disaster are unexpected, tragic, and heinous but the foremost task of the government is to mitigate the suffering of the affected people. Government should allocate sufficient budget to the departments so that they can play their role in effective manner.
Normally, when a disaster happens there are a lot of issues start arising. One of the most important issues is spread of diseases which further aggravate the problems of affected public. It is the duty of the government to provide health facilities, food, shelter, and basic amenities to the distressed people.
In short, it is obligatory duty of the government to protect its citizens from all adversities. Government should maintain and established its writ in every area which is prone to disasters. It should train Special Forces to tackle disasters on war footings. Instead of establishing new departments, allocate a sufficient budget to NGO’s which plays an important role to curtail the calamities which are inflicted upon us by nature.
